Indiana Goes 2-1 at Wendy's Duals

Ashland, Ohio - The No. 23 Indiana wrestling team improved its record to 7-3 on the season, despite dropping a close battle to Cleveland State, 21-15.
The Hoosiers faced UT-Chattanooga for the first match of the day and pulled out the 30-14 win in the final three bouts. No. 12 Joe Dubuque (Bloomfield, N.J./Glen Ridge) started things right for IU, garnering a 13-4 major decision at 125 pounds to put Indiana ahead, 4-0. Greg Schaefer (133 lbs./Evansville, Ind./Mater Dei) and Coyte Cooper (141 lbs./Anacortes, Wash./Anacortes) won their matches by major decision and fall, respectively. A continually tough spot in 2002-03 for IU has been the middle weights and Saturday proved to be no different as the Hoosiers dropped four straight to UT-Chattanooga before Ty Matthews (Jerome, Idaho/Jerome) won by major decision, 9-1, in the 184 pound matchup. At 197 pounds and heavyweight, Pat DeGain and Joel Powers won by forfeit.
After the Hoosiers' bye round, they returned to the mat to face Cleveland State. In the end, the Hoosiers lost their first dual meet in seven tries as the meet came down to the final heavyweight match. IU jumped out to an early lead when Dubuque decisioned Cleveland State's Rocco Mansueto, 8-4. His brother got back at IU, when he decisioned Schaefer, 3-2 to pull the team scoring to an even 3-3. Coyte Cooper won by fall to put the Hoosiers ahead, 9-3 but Matt Cooper, J.P. Stanley, Alex LaPointe and Andrew Wolf all dropped close matches to their respective competitors. Matthews decisioned his Cleveland State counterpart, 3-2 to pull back to within three points as the Hoosiers were down, 12-15. With Pat DeGain's(197 lbs./Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) 6-4 decision, the match was even, 15-15. True freshman Powers could not give the Hoosiers the scoring they needed as he lost by fall and IU lost the match, 21-15.
IU then took on host Ashland University and came away with a 37-3 win, losing only one match.
Two Hoosiers are a perfect 10-0 in the dual meet season. Redshirt freshman Dubuque has not lost a dual meet this season and has not lost since Dec. 7, 2002 when injury forced him to settle for a fourth place finish at the Northern Iowa Open. Coyte Cooper is also a perfect 10-0 on the year and has lost only once this year, dating back to the championship match of the Missouri Open on Nov. 24.
Since moving from heavyweight to 184 pounds, Ty Matthews has been a pillar of strength and scoring for Indiana. He is 8-0 in dual meets at 184 while DeGain has lost only once in dual meets and just twice all season, boasting a dual meet record of 9-1.

At 133 pounds, Cameron Sakon finished 3rd at 133 pounds, going 5-1 for the tournament.
