14th-Ranked Hoosiers to travel to
No. 17 Purdue on Saturday
Bloomington, Ind. - The Indiana University women's swimming program, which finished 10th at the 2002 NCAA Championships, is ranked 14th in the most recent College Swimming Coaches Association poll, which was released earlier today. Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Dorsey Tierney, Indiana currently maintains a perfect 5-0 dual meet record, including a 2-0 mark in the Big Ten. On Saturday, the women's squad will put its perfect record on the line as it travels to West Lafayette, Ind., to take on the 17th-ranked Boilermakers (7-0-1 overall, 2-0 Big Ten). The dual meet, which will take place at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center on the Purdue campus, is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
Tierney's women's squad last competed at Ohio State last Saturday and defeated the Buckeyes, 150.50-84.50. The women's squad has had a number of swimmers face difficult bouts with the flu this week.
The following text is a question and answer session with Coach Tierney in anticipation of Saturday's dual meet at Purdue.
Have you gotten any healthier?
"We are getting there. We're getting there."
How do you match up with Purdue this weekend?
"We match up pretty well with Purdue. It should be a good dual meet. It will be a good challenge for us. We need to see some tough racing and this is certainly the best racing that we are going to see. Purdue's had a great year so far."
What are some of the key events that will take place at the meet?
"Our distance swimmers have done a great job for us all year. I think this weekend they'll certainly need to step up. The mile, the 500 free, the 400 IM, and the 200 butterfly will be some strengths for us."
How do you view the relay events?
"The relay events will be tough. Our medley relay needs to continue to get better. We'll see how our starts are coming around and our explosiveness in the 50s. I think our speed is getting a little bit better. They've got a very solid 400 free relay. I think we do too. It will be a good challenge for us."
Are dual meets a strength of this team?
"I think we are much better at the conference level, as far as a three-day meet. We have some glaring weak spots and, on the other hand, we have some events where we are strong enough to score six, seven, or even eight people. Of course, in a dual meet you only have an opportunity to score three. I definitely think we are better in a three-day format but the college format only allows us to do that a couple of times a year so we certainly need to find a way to step up to the plate and find a way to win."
