Indiana Defeats Eastern Illinois

Charleston, Ill. - Indiana wrestling started a long weekend of competition off right, defeating Eastern Illinois by a team score of 35-15. With the win, the Hoosiers improve their dual meet record to 9-3 on the season.
Starting at 133 pounds, senior Greg Schaefer set the standard as he defeated EIU's Mike Stanley by major decision, 17-5. Schaefer improves his dual meet record to 9-3 on the season and 15-4 overall.
Ranked fifth in the nation at 141 pounds, junior Coyte Cooper kept his undefeated streak alive as he pinned Brian Sbertoli in 2:43 to improve to a perfect 12-0 in dual meets and 21-1 overall.
True freshman Matt Cooper gained his third-straight victory over EIU's Chris Jordan convincingly as he got the 13-2, major decision in the 149 pound bout. Cooper improves to 10-10 on the year and 5-7 in dual meets.
The Hoosiers then dropped the 157 and 165 pound weights as sophomore J.P. Stanley lost 8-2 to Panther senior Frank DeFilippis. Junior Alex LaPointe lost a major decision to EIU's Matt Veach.
Indiana sophomore Andrew Wolf decisioned Tom Tovello in the 174 pound matchup, improving his dual meet record to 4-2 on the season.
Senior Ty Matthews, ranked 12th in the country, won by pin over Josh Lepper, gaining the victory in 2:37. Matthews improves his dual meet record at 184 pounds to 10-0 on the season.
The 197 pound and heavyweight categories were forfeited to Indiana, giving sophomore, No. 6 Pat DeGain and true freshman Joel Powers victories. Indiana forfeited the 125 pound bout as redshirt freshman Joe Dubuque sat out with a nagging injury sustained earlier in the 2002-03 season.
Indiana returns home to host SIU-Edwardsville, Eastern Michigan and Missouri Valley on Saturday at noon at University Gymansium in Bloomington, Ind.
