A Q&A Session with Senior Megan Geers
Academic All-Big Ten selection Megan Geers (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) is the Indiana University record holder in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.63) and is a member of school-record holding teams in the 200- and 400-medley relays. Why did you choose to attend Indiana? What other schools did you consider and why did you eventually select IU?
Choosing a college was a very difficult choice for me. I looked at schools throughout the country for a place that really stood out. I looked at Purdue, Florida State, Ohio State, and Ohio University. Indiana was the last recruiting trip that I took and I really felt like it was a perfect fit. I thought the campus was beautiful, it has one of the best elementary education programs in the country and I felt like the swim team was very close. It was a program that I wanted to be a part of.
If you have a brother, who on the team would you want him to date and why? What would set her apart from the rest of your teammates?
Since my brother is nineteen I would choose one of the underclassmen. I would choose Erin Smith, who is a sophomore. She is such a genuine person and nothing seems to phase her. I admire her work ethic, and absolutely love her sense of humor. She is not easily rattled and she is a leader (even though I don't think that she is aware of this). I think that these qualities would make her a great person for someone to date.
What are your plans after graduation?
I plan to go to graduate school (maybe at the University of Massachusetts) to earn a degree in athletic administration. I would like to be involved with coaching swimming at some level.
What is your greatest personal accomplishment in the swimming pool?
When I reflect on my personal career it is difficult for me to think of one swim that would be my greatest personal accomplishment. I swam very well on both relays at Big Tens last year. I would have to say that being part of this swim team for the past four years would be the biggest accomplishment. It has been amazing to watch this team develop and become what it is today. I would like to think that I have had something to do with this.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? >
I do pretty typically things while I am not at the pool or in class. I like to hangout with my roommate, I love to shop, and I also really enjoy being around children. I help out with the local swim club and really enjoy the time I get to spend with the kids.
Do you have any unique pre-race or pre-meet rituals?
I am not a very superstitious person, so I don't really have a ritual before I swim. I know that I need to be relaxed and enjoying myself to compete well.
What is your favorite movie and why?
I will have to go with the classic Pretty Women. I love the rags to riches story. Who doesn't have this fairy tail dream?
What is your favorite television show and why? Book?
My favorite television show is Felicity. Even though it is not on the air anymore, the reruns can be seen twice a day on the Oxygen channel. My favorite book is the Lance Armstrong book It's Not about the Bike. He is such a brave man. I recommend that everyone read this book, especially if you think that you have problems too big to handle.
How do you deal with the monotony of early morning practices?
ROOMMATES. It is so much easier to get up when everyone in your house is getting up. Although, not many words are spoken I think that fact that we are doing it together makes all the difference. I also must say I am sorry to my 9:00 teacher because that is when I tend to crash.
What are your primary goals for the remainder of the season?
I would really like to go best times in my events, which are the 100 and 200 breaststroke. I would also really like for my team to win the big ten championship.
Describe Coach Tierney in three words?
Intense, Funny, Winner
Who is your funniest teammate and why?
I will have to go with Colleen McCracken, who is my roommate. That girl can just make me laugh (Sometimes on purpose and at other times without even realizing it!)
What is your favorite vacation destination?
Sanibel Island, Florida. It feels like you are on a tropical island far away.
Do you have any musical talents?
Absolutely not, but I do love to sing along with the radio in my car.
What are your favorite foods?
Ice cream.
What is your favorite event and why?
The 100 breaststroke is my favorite event because it is just the right distance and in breaststroke you get to breath every stroke.
Have you participated in any other sports?
Nope, I am a one sport girl!
How would you describe your personality?
I would say that am a pretty happy person who likes to smile. Sometimes
A little bit of competitiveness emerges as well.
