IU 3-0 in Indianapolis

Indianapolis, Ind.- The Indiana wrestling team rebounded from Friday night's loss to No. 16 Penn State by picking up three victories at the University of Indianapolis Triple Dual Meet. Indiana downed Carson-Newman (42-3), Truman State (39-9) and the host Indianapolis (34-12). Indiana improved to 15-4 on the season.
The Hoosiers began the day with a dominating 42-3 victory over Carson-Newman. Indiana won nine of the ten matches, including four by fall. Indiana then downed Truman State 39-9, including three pins. In the final match of the day, IU downed the ninth-ranked team in Division II, Indianapolis, 34-12. Indiana picked up three wins by pin against Indianapolis and one by technical fall.
Freshman Joe Dubuque regained the form he had before his knee injury in picking up three victories on the day at 125. Dubuque downed Chonci Houston of Carson-Newman, 6-2. In his next match against Truman State's Steve Cox, Dubuque turned in a major decision victory, 19-3. In his final match of the day, he picked up a pin of Indianapolis' Wiley Craft at the 1:12 mark of the first period. With the three victories on the day, the redshirt freshman improved to 22-4 on the year and 14-1 in dual matches.
Senior Greg Schaefer followed suit at 133 as he also picked up three victories on the day. Schaefer picked up two major decisions and one pin on the day. He started the day downing Carson-Newman's Jake Brumbelow, 17-6. The fifth-year senior picked up his sixth pin of the season on Allen Stokes of Truman State. In his final match of the day, Schaefer picked up his 50th career dual match victory as he downed Earl Wilson of Indianapolis, 14-4. Schaefer is 21-5 on the season and 15-4 in dual matches.
Junior Coyte Cooper rebounded from his second loss of the season at 141 by picking up three victories on Saturday, all by pin. Cooper pinned Bruce Ross of Carson Newman, Merrick Meyer of Truman State and Indianapolis' Josh Holden. Truman State's Meyer is currently ranked 8th in NCAA Division II at 141. Cooper is now 27-2 on the season and 18-1 in dual matches, including 15 pins. Cooper's 15 pins on the season ranks third on the Hoosiers single season pins list and his 25 career pins ranks in a tie for sixth.
Sophomore Pat DeGain continued his winning streak in picking up three victories at 197. DeGain is currently riding an 18-match winning streak. DeGain started the day off with his eighth pin of the season over Burnley Bell of Carson-Newman. DeGain won his match against Truman State by forfeit and then downed Indianapolis' Ryan Wagner by major decision, 15-4. DeGain improved to 26-2 overall and 18-1 in dual matches. DeGain's 26 victories on the season is a career-high.
Freshman heavyweight Joel Powers also went 3-0 on the afternoon, including two by fall. Powers started the day off by pinning Tommy O'Neil of Carson-Newman. He continued his run by pinning Truman State's Matt Sonn. Powers would need everything he could get against Indianapolis' Evan Love as he downed Love 4-2 in overtime. Powers is now 15-7 on the season with nine pins.
Redshirt freshman Andy Rios went 2-0 on the day at 184 for Indiana picking up wins over Carson-Newman's Andrey Sharapov and Indianapolis' Mike Jackson. Rios win over Sharapov came by pin, while his win over Jackson was a technical fall, 21-6, win. Rios improved to 11-6 on the year and 3-1 in dual matches.
Freshmen Matt Cooper and Isaac Knable each went 2-1 on the day for Indiana. Cooper went 2-1 at 149 with a major decision win over Carson-Newman's Travis Summers and a forfeit win over Truman State. Cooper's loss came to the 5th ranked 149-pounder in Division II, Indianapolis' Mitch Napier, by pin. Cooper is now 15-12 on the year.
Knable went 2-1 at 157 with a major decision and a pin. Against Carson-Newman, Knable downed Michael Church by major decision, 12-4. He lost his next match 7-1 to Truman State's Corey Crandall. In his final match of the day against Indianapolis, Knable pinned Zach Goldsberry 2:20 into the match. Knable improved to 7-4 on the season with five pins.
The Hoosiers will return to action on the road with trips to Ohio State and Michigan next week. Indiana goes to No. 4 Ohio State on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. match. They will then travel to Ann Arbor on Friday to battle No. 10 Michigan also at 7:00 p.m.
