NO. 14 IU SPLITS DOUBLE DUAL WITH 20TH-RANKED PENN STATE, MICHIGAN STATE
East Lansing, Mich. - Despite its perfect 6-0 record, including a 3-0 mark in the Big Ten Conference heading into this weekend's double dual meet vs. No. 20 Penn State and Michigan State, Indiana head coach Dorsey Tierney has often stated that the 14th-ranked Hoosiers are best suited to compete in a championship format rather than a dual meet setting. After Indiana's impressive 198-102 victory at 17th-ranked Purdue last Saturday, some people may have scoffed at Tierney's belief.Today, however, at the Charles McCaffree Pool on the Michigan State campus, Penn State's strength in several relay events allowed them to overcome a small deficit to defeat the Hoosiers, 195.50-173.50. Indiana (7-1 overall, 4-1 Big Ten) did defeat Michigan State, 259-111.
In today's morning session, Indiana's performance was strengthened by a 1-2-3 performance in the 400-yard individual medley, which included impressive performances by IU freshmen Kristen Bradley and Lauren Lubus, who finished second and third, respectively. Penn State, however, won both the 200-yard medley relay and the 800 free relay, while also winning the 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly.
During the afternoon session, junior Sarah Fiden won the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:38.72) but Indiana was unable to make a huge dent in the team scoring as Penn State finished second and third in the event. After Penn State's Sarah Shephard won the 200-yard backstroke, Indiana junior Meghan Medendorp got the Hoosiers back on the winning track as she captured a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 51.34. Penn State closed out the meet winning the 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, and 400-yard freestyle relay.
Indiana returns to action vs. Kentucky at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 7.
