Mena Travels with National Team

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana wrestling assistant coach Mike Mena departs Monday afternoon for Krasnoyarask, Russia and the Ivan Yarygin Memorial, part of the 2003 U.S. Men's Freestyle Winter Tour.
"It is an honor to represent the U.S. at the Ivan Yarygin Memorial in Russia," said Mena. "As far as expectations for the trip, I expect to win."
The Yarygin Memorial will take place Jan. 31 through Feb. 2. The U.S. team traveling to Krasnoyarsk, Russia is led by coaches John Peterson and Royce Alger while the team is made up of Mena at 121 pounds as he is supported by the sponsoring club team of the New York Athletic Club. Jamill Kelly at 145.5 pounds, Ramico Blackmon at 163 pounds, former Indiana assistant Charles Burton at 185 pounds, Daniel Cormier at 211.5 pounds and Tolly Thompson at 264.5 pounds.
Mena has helped lead the Hoosiers to a 15-4 dual meet record this season with the majority of the Big Ten schedule lying ahead of the IU team.
Mena was also a member of the U.S. Freestyle National Team in 2002 and was a U.S. Olympic Freestyle Team Alternate in 2000. This is his third season as an assistant with the Hoosiers.
In Mena's absence the team will compete against both Ohio State and Michigan before he returns when the Hoosiers face off with intrastate rival Purdue in a Titan Series bout on Feb. 7 in Bloomington, Ind.
