Bloomington, Ind. - On February 1, various members of the Indiana rowing team will take part in the 20th annual Bop to the Top Stair Climb in Indianapolis, Ind. The race begins at 9:30 a.m. and lasts until 1:00 p.m.
The Bop to the Top Stair Climb is a race up the 37 floors of the AUL Tower. Each participant starts separately on a 30-second interval.
Through pledges and donations the event raises money for the Riley Hospital for Children. Last year almost 500 people participated and collected $40,000.
Sophomore Varsity rower Sarah Meyer found out about this race and introduced the idea to her fellow teammates and received more interest than expected.
"I learned about the event through the Tuxedo Brothers event planning company because they plan most of the "fun runs" around the Indianapolis area, and I have participated in their events before, so I am on their mailing list to receive entry forms for future events," Meyer explained. "I got the information in the mail, and I was immediately interested because it benefits Riley Hospital for Children, and I have worked with that incredible establishment in the past. Also I have this crazy affinity for running and I love to do all kinds of fun races, and since we do occasional stadium workouts as a team, I thought I'd be in pretty good shape to do this race."
Both Varsity and Novice rowers are participating in the event, which first year collegiate rower Laura Teskoski feels will bring about team togetherness.
"The race is for a good cause and it sounds like a lot of fun," Teskoski said. "It is also a good team experience to have that will make us all a little closer."
Some of the Hoosiers have decided to enter the race individually (20-24 female age group) and others have decided to enter as a team of four (20-24 female age group). All individual participants will race against each other. As for the team competition, each team member's time will be added together for a total team time. The team with the lowest time will be the winner of the team competition of the event.
There will be an awards ceremony that will take place in the AUL auditorium located in the rear of the building. Awards will begin at 1:30 PM.
"I look at this event as a team building event," senior Varsity squad member Erin Koers said. "We have six teams entered to race as well as a whole afternoon in Indy planned for the team. Varsity and Novice are going, so it will be an opportunity for us to continue getting to know each other outside of practice. Since the race supports Riley Hospital, it gives us rowers a chance to contribute to the community, despite our busy schedules."
