A Q&A WITH SENIOR KRISTY MARTIN

Where is Gardner, Massachusetts?
It is in the north central part of Massachusetts, about 45 minutes west of Boston.
How did you end up at Indiana from Massachusetts? What other schools did you consider?
I ended up here because of the swimming program. (Head coach) Dorsey (Tierney) had just come in as the new coach and the program was getting better. I took recruiting trips to the University of Washington and Kansas but I signed early with Indiana. :)
Do you have any brothers and sisters? Is so, what are their ages and what do they do?
I have one older brother who is 25 and right now he is working.
What are your plans after graduation and how does your academic major play into those plans?
Well, that's a tough question...I'm graduating in December of 2003 so I have some time to think about my plans. I really hope to find a good internship this summer that will help me narrow down whatI really want to do.
What is your greatest personal accomplishment in the swimming pool?
One thing that I always talk about is when I was 12 years old and I went a 1:03 in the 100-yard IM. I didn't think anything of it when I was 12 but now that I look back I don't know how I did that! One of my best swimming memories and accomplishments was when Tina (Gretlund), Brooke (Taflinger) and I finished first, second, and third in the 400 IM last year at Big Tens.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I like to relax, watch movies, and just hang out.
Do you have any unique pre-race or pre-meet rituals?
I don't think I do anything too unique but, when I go to warm-up, I go over to the pool about 10 minutes before I want to get in because I just stand there with my goggles on ready to go and anticipate the cold water. I do it every time!
What is your favorite movie and why?
This is a really tough question for me. I'd have to say it is a tie between the Sandlot and The Goonies. Both are just childhood favorites that never get old to me. I can quote many of the lines from both movies.
What is your favorite television show and why? What is your favorite book?
My favorite TV show was Felicity but it is off the air now! I do like watching Friends now but it's just not the same. My favorite books are the Harry Potter series. I read them all this summer and couldn't put them down!
How do you deal with the monotony of early morning practices?
Mornings aren't really too bad for me because I'm a morning person. I have also been doing them since I was 12 so I've gotten use to it.
The 200 fly and 400 IM have to be the two of the most grueling events in college swimming. How do you handle the race itself and the training for those events, psychologically and physically?
Well the training is a lot harder both psychologically and physically! It is really hard to stay into it when you are dead tired and ready to cry but it helps so much to have a great bunch of girls to train with and to help you through the practices. Everyone has bad days and we all try to help each other. The race is the fun part because you don't think about the pain or your practices, you just go out there and race whoever is next to you. And having a great race erases all the painful memories of training.
What are your primary goals for the remainder of the season?
I just want to swim fast.
Describe Coach Tierney in three words?
Hardworking, stubborn, and intense
Who is your funniest teammate?
There are too many to name just one.
What is your favorite vacation destination?
Well, with swimming I haven't really been able to vacation so I'll get back to you once I'm retired and I can explore.
Do you have any musical talents?
Definitely not!
What are your favorite foods?
I love bread, cheeseburgers and hot dogs.
What is your favorite event and why?
I like the 400 IM when I am rested (because it feels so much better). There is so much strategy to it and it is such a tough event.
Have you participated in any other sports?
No, I started swimming when I was 6 because I wanted to play hockey like my brother. My mom didn't want me to. She asked if I wanted to try swimming.
How would you describe your personality?
I like to think that I am a fun, easygoing person with a good sense of humor.
