Hoosiers Undefeated at Buckeye Duals

Columbus, Ohio - A very young Indiana wrestling program took a huge leap forward in the Buckeye Duals, held in Columbus, Ohio on Jan. 4, winning four straight dual meets to finish as the best team in the Duals.
Four IU grapplers went undefeated individually. Joe Dubuque at 125 pounds, Coyte Cooper at 141 pounds, Ty Matthews at 184 pounds and Pat DeGain at 197 pounds defeated each of their opponents en route to extending their team dual meet record to 5-2 on the season.
"We had a really good day," said head coach Duane Goldman. "I am really impressed with the effort shown today. We are continuing to grow as a team and the guys continue to work hard to progress. I was very pleased with their efforts today."
In the first series of the duals the Hoosiers faced Duke and came away with a 41-3 victory. The Hoosiers won every weight class against the Blue Devils with the exception of the 165 pound match. 125-pound freshman No. 15 Joe Dubuque (Bloomfield, N.J./Glen Ridge) won by pin in 2:21 while three other Hoosiers won by fall. In the 141-pound bout, No. 6 Coyte Cooper (Anacortes, Wash./Anacortes) pinned Adam Benitez in 1:39. 197 pound sophomore No. 10 Pat DeGain (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) pinned Mark Thompson in 2:18. The heavyweight bout pitted IU's Joel Powers (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East) against Duke's Roy Williams. Powers won by fall in 37 seconds. Mike Engberg (157/Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) and No. 16 Ty Matthews (184/Jerome, Idaho/Jerome) both won by major decision over their Blue Devil counterparts.
In the second series, Indiana met Buffalo on the mat and won, 19-16. Bolstered by their strongest weight classes, the Hoosiers racked up the points in five victories while Buffalo was unable to make their comeback. Dubuque and Cooper remain undefeated in dual meets, both are 5-0 in their respective weight classes. Dubuque won by technical fall, 25-0 while Cooper got the 12-5, major decision. Greg Schaefer got a 13-2 major decision over Buffalo's Mike Trotta. In the other two victories for IU, 184 pound Ty Matthews decisioned Garrett Bontempo in overtime while DeGain decisioned Kyle Cerminara in overtime.
Indiana drew a bye in the third series but picked up where they left off in the fourth series, downing Clarion, 26-12. True freshman Matt Cooper (Anacortes, Wash./Bloomington (Ind.) South) won his first bout of the season in the 149 pound weight class, defeating Clarion's Jim Perry, 5-2. Another key performance came from IU's 174 pound Brady Richardson as he won by major decision over David Gardner, 15-4.
In the final series of the duals, the Hoosiers faced Northern Illinois and came away with a 28-11 win. IU dropped just three matches in the team victory. DuBuque, Coyte Cooper and Matthews all turned in major decision efforts while DeGain won by fall in 2:13. Wrestling in his first match of the day, Andrew Wolf (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) defeated NIU's Bill Lowney, 3-2, in the 174 pound match.
Having switched weights ranging from heavyweight to 197 pounds down to his now-permanent 184, Ty Matthews is currently undefeated at 184 with a 5-0 record. Two other Hoosier grapplers maintain an unblemished record on the season as Dubuque has won all nine of his dual meets while Coyte Cooper has gone 9-0 in dual meets and has dropped just one match the entire season, the championship bout of the Missouri Open.
The Hoosiers next travel to the Wendy's Duals in Ashland, Ohio on Jan. 12.
