LOCAL DIVERS IMPRESSIVE AT
SPEEDO AMERICAN CUP QUALIFYING
Bloomington, Ind. - The present and the future of Indiana University diving program figured prominently during today's second round of qualifying for the prestigious Speedo American Cup, which will be held at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center on the Indiana University-Bloomington campus beginning Friday. The meet will conclude on Sunday, January 12.In today's action, Lindsay Weigle, a Bloomington South senior and Indiana University signee, led a field of 12 divers with a first-place finish. In a total of five dives, she recorded a score of 250.00. Michelle Brown (Unattached), a junior at the University of Kentucky who originally dove at UCLA before transferring, and Jessica Livingston (Lightning Diving), the 2002 Missouri High School State Champion, finished in second and third place, respectively. Weigle recently won the 2002 Speedo National Junior Diving Championships 3-meter title in the 16-18 division. Indiana University senior Lori Matthys finished seventh with a score of 194.70.
"Lindsay did a great job today," said Indiana University Diving Events Coordinator, who assists five-time U.S. National Coach-of-the-Year Jeff Huber and coaches Weigle with Indiana Diving. "She hasn't been up on tower much since the summer as she's been competing in high school. It's nice to have her back up there as tower is probably her best event. It was nice to see her do such a good job. She actually turned around to compete in a high school meet tonight. That's a tough double for her."
On the men's side, Indiana University junior Marc Carlton, a member of the U.S. National Team, finished in second place on the 3-Meter. He recorded a six-dive score of 349.50, narrowly trailing Chris Colwill (Jetstream Diving), who finished first with a score of 355.50. Carlton is a member of the U.S. National Team, earning a berth on the squad with a sixth place finish on platform at the 2002 Speedo Diving Championships. Colwill, who is a freshman at the University of Georgia, is also a U.S. National Team member.
"Marc did a very good job today," said Baumann. "We thought he was actually going to lead that one from start to finish. He started out very strong and did a nice job. He just had a little bit of a miss on his last dive and get caught be a few points."
After tomorrow's break in action, diving will resume on Friday at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center with the preliminary round of the Men's 3-Meter and Women's Platform, the quarterfinals of Women's Platform, and the finals of Men's Platform Synchro along with Women's and Men's 3-Meter Synchro.
