Bloomington, Ind.- The Indiana women’s swimming and diving programs will host the Indiana Invitational for the eighth-straight season at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The Hoosiers return home after two Big Ten meets on the road against Wisconsin and Northwestern on Nov. 7 and 8. Indiana owns a 3-1 mark overall and 1-1 record in the Big Ten. IU’s lone loss came at current No. 10 Wisconsin.

The Invite field will consist of eight teams, the No. 13 Hoosiers, No. 23 Missouri, Pittsburgh, Michigan State, Arkansas, Cincinnati, Illinois and Evansville.. Kentucky and the Air Force Academy will both be represented in the diving competitions.
The Invitational will be Friday, Nov. 21, through Sunday, Nov. 23. The preliminary competitions will be at 9:00 a.m. all three days, while finals will start at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Sunday Finals will be at 3:00 p.m. The diving portion of the Invitational will be 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. all three days. The prelim portion of the Invitational will be swum in short course yards, while the finals session will be swum in short course meters. Relays as well as the 1650 freestyle will be swam in final heats only.
Indiana Diving will host the collegiate part of the Indiana Invitational as well as the Indiana Open this weekend.

Scouting the Field
The Invitational is comprised of eight teams, two that are ranked in the top 25 (No. 13 Indiana and No. 23 Missouri) and one receiving votes (Pittsburgh). Along with the Hoosiers at 3-1, Illinois, Missouri and Pittsburgh all enter the Invitational with winning records. The Fighting Illini are 4-0 on the year with victories over Illinois State, Toledo, Iowa State and Southern Illinois. Missouri enters at 4-2 with its two losses coming to No. 1 Auburn (86-53) and No. 17 Texas A&M (178.5-121.5). The Tigers own victories over Arkansas (81-59), Truman State, Kansas and Nebraska. Pittsburgh comes in with a 3-1 record. The Panthers and Hoosiers have a common opponent in No. 19 Notre Dame, as Pitt lost 184-116 to the Irish, while IU downed Notre Dame, 176-124. Pitt holds victory over current No. 21 Washington, 126-111 last weekend. IU also swam against Washington this season, but it was at the SMU Classic, where the Hoosiers finished third and the Huskies were fourth.
Arkansas enters the Invitational with a 1-4 record, but all four losses have come to teams ranked in the top 25. The Lady Razorbacks have lost to No. 1 Auburn (81-58), No. 23 Missouri (81-59), No. 2 Florida (164.5-121.5) and No. 17 Texas A&M (178-113). The Hoosiers also swam against the No. 2 Gators at the SMU Classic. Cincinnati comes in with an 0-1 record after losing at Oakland, 137-79. Michigan State and Evansville both come into the Invite off victories. The Spartans sit at 1-3 on the year after a 126-117 win over Ball State. Two of Michigan State’s losses have come to ranked opponents (No. 16 Michigan and No. 20 Florida State). Evansville downed Eastern Illinois, 143-100, last weekend to enter the Invite at 2-5. The Purple Aces started the year off with a 165-72 win over Butler. Evansville travels to Bloomington for the second time this season after losing 183-104 to IU on Oct. 18.
Recapping Wisconsin and Northwestern
The Hoosiers fell 142-100 to current No. 10 Wisconsin before downing Northwestern, 182-116, two weeks ago. Indiana won 12 of the 16 events against Northwestern.
Freshman Leila Vaziri was a quadruple winner in the meet against Northwestern, while putting up impressive times against Wisconsin. She won both the 100-yard (58.32) and 200-yard backstroke (2:04.87) events against Northwestern. The Coral Springs, Fla., native also swam the opening leg of the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays that were victorious. Against Wisconsin, Vaziri swam an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.11). The time was the fifth-fastest in school history. She also swam the sixth-fastest time in school history in the 100-yard freestyle (51.24).
Vaziri teamed with senior Greer McGettrick, junior Erin Smith and senior Meghan Medendorp in the 200-yard medley. Vaziri teamed with freshman Annica Lofstedt, junior Tammy Kostner and Medendorp in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team won the event in a time of 1:35.18, bettering second-place Northwestern by nearly three seconds.
Freshman Lindsay Weigle won three of the four diving events against Northwestern and Wisconsin. The Bloomington South product won both the one-meter and three-meter events with season-best totals against the Badgers. Weigle won the one-meter against Northwestern.
Sophomore Lauren Torpey was a double winner against the Wildcats, winning the 200 and 500 freestyle. The Mentor, Ohio, native posted season-bests of 1:53.35 in the 200 freestyle and 4:58.28 in the 500 freestyle.
In the Northwestern meet, sophomore Kristen Bradley won the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.60), senior Brooke Taflinger won the 1000-yard freestyle (10:09.32), senior Meghan Medendorp won the 50-yard freestyle (24.19) and junior Erin Smith won the 100-yard freestyle (52.75).
Senior Greer McGettrick was a double winner as she swam a leg on the 200-yard medley relay and won the 100-yard breastsroke (1:05.77) against Northwestern. Against Wisconsin, McGettrick swam the 10th-fastest time in school history of 2:22.93 in the 200 breaststroke.
Smith won the only swimming event for the Hoosiers against the Badgers, claiming the 200-yard butterfly in a season-best time.

Indiana Invite last year
The Hoosiers won the 2002 Indiana Invitational, bettering second-place Tennessee by over 300 points. Indiana used a strong showing from its middle distance and distance freestylers as well as two memorable performances from Sarah Fiden and Brooke Taflinger.
Fiden broke school records in both the 1000 freestyle and 1650 freestyle during the Invitational. She won the 1650 free with a school record and NCAA A cut time of 16:21.13. The time was 27th one-hundredths faster than the school record she set the pervious season. Her first 1000 free was also a school record, bettering her 2001 record by 22 one-hundredths. Fiden also won the 500 freestyle.
Taflinger had a memorable swim in the 400 IM as well. She won the event with a time of 4:18.93. At the time, the time was among the top 10 nationally.
Along with Fiden, the Hoosiers had strong performances in the 500 free and 1650 free. Erin Gorlesky and Taflinger followed Fiden as the Hoosiers went 1-2-3 in the event. In the 1650 free, Lauren Torpey came in second with a season-best time of 16:45.03. The time was the fifth fastest in school history as well as an NCAA B cut time.
Jenny Bechem and Gorlesky rounded out the Hoosiers’ sweep of the first four spots. Bechem placed third followed by Gorlesky in fourth. Colgin ended the event in sixth place.
In the 400 IM, Kristen Bradley finished fourth, while Gorlesky came in seventh. Bradley was also the top Hoosier finisher in the 200 IM as she claimed fourth. Taflinger continued to score for the Hoosiers as she placed sixth.
Indiana’s top relay during the Invite was the 800 freestyle. The Hoosiers went 2-3 in the event. The ‘A’ relay of Colgin, Fiden, Gorlesky and Smith placed second with the fifth-fastest time in school history. The ‘B’ relay of Taflinger, Williams, Thurston and Torpey was third with the seventh fastest in school history.
Top 10 School History
The Hoosiers have placed 13 different times in the top 10 in school history. Eleven of the times came from individuals, while two were from relays. Here is a look at the times that rank among the top 10:
