Bloomington, Ind. – The Indiana women’s swimming and diving team maintained its lead after the second day of the Indiana Invitational with 582 points. Pittsburgh is second (508) followed by Missouri (499), Arkansas (331), Illinois (310), Michigan State (293), Kentucky (123), Cincinnati (92) and Evansville (40).
“We were pretty good tonight,” Indiana head swimming coach Dorsey Tierney said. “We were pretty bad this morning. Here we get some second swims, even though some of them are not in the heat they want to be in. We have to practice being a lot better in the morning because when it comes down to the championship meets, the second swims won’t be there if you don’t get it done in the morning. I though our IMers did real well. Leila Vaziri had a really nice night, as well as Doherty Colgin. That was the first time she ever got a US National cut. We had some good 800 free relays and even our medley relay was very solid tonight. Overall, we did a better job tonight, but we would like to see our team be more focused on their morning swims.”
Freshman Leila Vaziri stole the show for Indiana as she claimed two individual championships and swam the anchor leg of the 800-meter freestyle relay. The Coral Spring, Fla., native won the 200-meter freestyle and the 100-meter backstroke. Her time of 2:01.49 in the 200 freestyle was an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time and, when converted to short course yards, was the third-fastest time in school history. She also claimed the 100-meter backstroke title in an NCAA ‘B’ of 1:02.49. Additionally, the time converted to short course yards was 55.99, which is the third-fastest time in school history.
For the second straight night, senior Brooke Taflinger and sophomore Kristen Bradley went 1-2 in the individual medley event. The Hoosier duo came in with times of 4:46.27 and 4:50.06, respectively, in the 400-meter IM. The duo went 1-2 with Bradley taking the top spot in the 200-meter IM on Friday night. Both times were NCAA ‘B’ qualifying times, while Taflinger’s time converted to short course yards was a season-best at 4:16.50. Senior Erin Gorlesky won the consolation finals of the 400-meter IM with a time of 4:56.62. The time converted to short course yards was a season-best at 4:25.77.
The Hoosiers placed two other individuals in the finals of the 200-meter freestyle to go along with Vaziri. Sophomore Doherty Colgin came in third, an eye-lash behind second at 2:02.70. Bradley was fourth in the event at 2:03.78. Both times were season and career-bests when converted to short course yards. With the conversion, the time was 1:49.94 for Colgin and 1:50.91 for Bradley. Colgin’s time was also an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time, as well as the fifth-fastest in Indiana history. Bradley’s time was the 10th-fastest 200 freestyle time in school history.
The Hoosiers capped off the second day of competition with an impressive showing in the 800-meter freestyle relay, taking positions 1-2-4. The team of Colgin, Bradley, Gorlesky and Vaziri went 8:17.41 to better Indiana’s ‘B’ relay of Taflinger, senior Meghan Medendrop, junior Erin Smith and senior Sarah Fiden. The time for the winners, converted to short course yards, was 7:25.68, which is a season-best and the fifth-fastest in school history. The ‘B’ relay’s time, converted to short course yards was 7:27.83, which was the seventh-fastest in school history. The Hoosiers’ ‘C’ relay of sophomore Lauren Torpey, freshman Clarissa Wentworth and sophomores Lauren Lubus and Sarah Bugden tied for fourth with a time of 8:25.48.
Smith was the lone Hoosier to advance to the finals of the 100-meter butterfly. She finished seventh with a time of 1:03.88. Senior Greer McGettrick was also the lone Hoosier to advance to the finals of the 100-meter breaststroke. The Studio City, Calif., native took eighth in the event.
The Hoosiers’ 200-meter medley relay of Vaziri, McGettrick, Smith and Medendorp took second in a time of 1:56.72. When converted to short course yards, the time was a season-best at 1:44.58, as well as the ninth fastest time in school history.
In diving, freshman Heather Chapman took eighth for the Hoosiers in the three-meter springboard. The Indianapolis, Ind., native scored 369.85.
Indiana will look to capture the 2003 Indiana Invitational title tomorrow with prelims at 9:00 a.m. and the finals at 2:30 p.m. The list of events for tomorrow includes: the 1650-yard freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay. Prelims will be in short course yards, while finals (with the exception of the timed 1650-yard freestyle finals) will be in short course meters.
