Five Hoosiers Place in Top Five

Columbia, Mo. - The Indiana wrestling squad opened the 2003-04 season this weekend at the fourth annual Missouri Open. The annual event has quickly become one of the nation's largest and strongest events, as over 20 teams and 500 individuals competed at the Hearnes Center Fieldhouse on Sunday on the campus of the University of Missouri.
For the Hoosiers, five individuals finished in the top five places of their weight classes in the open divisions.
At 141, top seed Coyte Cooper took first-place honors after winning by medical forfeit over second seeded J.P. Reese of Missouri. Sophomore Cameron Sakon turned in a strong performance finishing fourth in the weight class.
Redshirt freshman Matt McIntire, the fourth seed, took home second place at 149. McIntire lost a close match to the number two seed, Jeremy Spates of Missouri, 4-3 in the finals.
Brady Richardson, the fifth seed, captured a fourth place finish at 174.
Rounding out the top performances for Indiana was junior Andy Rios. Rios, the third seed at 184 finished second after falling to top seed Brian Glynn of Illinois 5-2 in the finals.
Indiana is back in action on November 29 when they return home to dual with Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Manchester at 2:00 p.m. at the University Gym. IU has been victorious in its last nine encounters against the SIUE Cougars, including a 36-6 win last season in Edwardsville. This will be the first meeting between IU and Manchester.
