IU Sweeps Dual Meet

Bloomington, Ind.--The Indiana wrestling team picked up two wins Saturday in its home opener with Southern Illinois- Edwardsville and Manchester. IU defeated SIUE, 36-9 and defeated Manchester, 32-6. In addition, SIUE picked up its first win, defeating Manchester, 19-16.
"It was a good start to our dual meet season," said head coach Duane Goldman. "It was the first time this season that our guys weighed in with a one hour weigh in. It is good for them to feel the effects of that and be able to step out and compete. We also had a few of our starters out this weekend and some of our backup guys stepped in there and did a good job. It was a good day to give everyone some experience and something to work on."
Sophomore Joe Dubuque (125 pounds) and Coyte Cooper (141 pounds) had a good outing for the Hoosiers, each of them going undefeated and pinning both their opponents. Dubuque pinned Steve Chico of SIUE just 2:45 into the match and Nick Iannarelli of Manchester 1:24 into the match. Cooper pinned Alec Liniger of SIUE at 2:22 and Mike Hanlin (Manchester) at 3:21. Cooper improved to 6-0 on the season and Dubuque now sits at 3-2.
Redshirt freshman Matt McIntire (149 pounds) went 1-1 on the afternoon, after falling to Joe Rujawitz of SIUE , 6-1 and then fighting back to pin Rocky Burkett of Manchester 3:22 into the match.
In the 157 pound weight class, junior JP Stanley defeated both Matt Warren of SIUE, 8-3 and Danny Irwin of Manchester, 5-4. Also picking up two wins was sophomore Tim Falls (165 pounds), who beat Chris Deutscher of Manchester and Matt Olivia of SIUE, 5-0, 3-1 respectively.
In the larger weight classes, sophomore Brady Richardson earned eight points for IU after he defeated both of his opponents by major decisions. In his first match, he went up against Derrick Whitback of Manchester and defeated him, 17-3. He also defeated Pat Healy of SIUE, 19-4.
Sophomore Andy Rios who also won by two major decisions. He first defeated Paul Sorenson of Manchester, 17-7 and then went on to beat Branden Lorek of SIUE, 17-6. In the 197 pound class, junior Pat DeGain wrestled once and earned a win over Sean Tyus of SIUE, 10-5. Finally, sophomore Joel Powers earned his two wins by defeating Matt Overman of Manchester, 7-0 and pinning his final opponent Chris Moore at the 3:39 mark.
The Hoosiers are back in action next weekend when they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to take part in the Northern Iowa Open, Saturday, Dec. 6. The meet will be an all day event.
