Hoosiers Open Up Conference Duals on the Road

Bloomington, Ind.- The Hoosiers will hit the road to battle a pair of Big Ten opponents this weekend. The meets will be the first in conference for the Hoosiers this season. No. 14 Indiana takes on No. 12 Wisconsin in Madison at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7. The Hoosiers will then take on Northwestern in Evanston at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8.

IU is 5-4 all-time against the Badgers, but the two have not faced off since the 1991-92 season. The Hoosiers were victorious in the meeting 151.5-142.5 in Bloomington.
The Hoosiers are 10-8-1 all-time versus Northwestern, including a 2-0-1 record in the last three meetings. IU won last year’s meet in Bloomington, 168-123.
Scouting Wisconsin
The Wisconsin Badgers are currently ranked 12th in the lastest CSCAA poll and hold a dual meet record of 1-1. The Badgers are also 1-0 in the Big Ten after beating Iowa.
Wisconsin won the Wisconsin Invitational by winning all 13 events to start out the season. Bethany Pendleton was the only double individual winner as she won the 200 IM (2:04.23) and the 500 freestyle (4:54.84).
Susan Johnson and Carly Piper, last season’s Big Ten Swimmer of the Year, each won three individual events and swam a leg on a winning relay as Wisconsin downed Iowa, 172-87. The Badgers won all 16 events against Iowa.
Johnson captured individual titles in the 100 backstroke (56.93), 200 butterfly (2:07.30) and 200 backstroke (2:02.40). She also swam a leg on the winning 400 medley relay (3:48.66). Piper won the 1000 freestyle (9:55.00), the 200 freestyle (1:49.61) and the 500 freestyle (4:55.39). She also swam a leg on the 200 freestyle relay.
Wisconsin dropped its first dual meet of the season to seventh-ranked Arizona, 172.5-128.5. Piper won two events for the Badgers, the 500 freestyle (4:49.84) and the 1000 freestyle (9:51.27). Pendleton won the 400 IM (4:20.53) for Wisconsin, while the 400 freestyle relay (3:24.84) also took first.
Scouting Northwestern
The Wildcats are currently 1-0 in dual meets this season. They opened the eyar with a 122-110 victory over Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In the meet, Northwestern won 12 of 13 events.
Amy Mueller and Leanne Dumanis led the way for the Wildcats with two individual victories. Mueller won the 200 freestyle (1:55.83) and the 500 freestyle (5:06.90). Dumanis claimed both diving events winning the one-meter at 2:50.65 and the three-meter with a score of 248.17.
Vicky West in the 1000 freestyle (10:21.68), Erin Swenson in the 200 IM (2:07.14), Christy Olin in the 200 butterfly (2:05.00), Marijana Surkovic in the 100 freestyle (53.60), Rachel Tepe in the 200 backstroke (2:08.40) and Katie Simmons in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.17) all claimed individual wins for the Wildcats.
NU also won both relays at the meet. The 400 medley relay won with a time of 3:55.20, while the 400 freestyle relay won at 3:35.51.
The Wildcats also opened up at home by winning the Northwestern Relays. Northwestern won seven of 11 events, scoring 208 points, bettering Illinois by 26 points.
Northwestern Last Season
The Hoosiers downed Northwestern in Bloomington last season, 168-123.
Meghan Medendorp finished first in four events. She was a member of the 200-medley relay that finished with a time of 1:46.63 and contributed to the 200 freestyle relay that placed first at 1:34.94. Individually, she claimed first place in the 50 (23.98) and 100 free (51.50). Erin Smith and Tammy Kostner were also members of the medley races with Medendorp.
Sarah Fiden swam the 1000 freestyle event in a time of 10:05.99, good enough for a first-place finish. Finishing first in the 200 freestyle event was freshman Doherty Colgin who came in at 1:52.54.
One of the highlighted events for the Hoosier women was the 500 freestyle, as IU went on to capture the top three positions. Erin Gorlesky finished first for Indiana (4:56.97), as Fiden and Lauren Torpey followed behind.
Contributing to Indiana's victory were divers Cassandra Cardinell and Sarah Hildebrand. Cardinell finished first with 281.48 points in the one-meter diving event as Hildebrand took the three-meter diving event, finishing with 219.45 points.
Sibling Rivalry
Indiana head swimming coach Dorsey Tierney and Northwestern head swimming coach Jim Tierney are sister and brother. Dorsey is in her sixth season with the Hooisers, while Jim is in his 10th with the Wildcats.
The siblings have faced off as head coaches on four occasions with Dorsey holding the 2-1-1 advantage. In last season’s matchup, Dorsey’s Hoosiers got the best of Northwestern, 168-123.
Recapping No. 19 Notre Dame
The Hoosiers dominated No. 19 Notre Dame, 176-124, at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Bradley led the way for the Hoosiers with two individual victories and three career-best times. The Lindsay, Ontario, native won the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard individual medley and took second in the 200-yard breaststroke behind teammate Brooke Taflinger. Bradley capped her meet with the best swim of the evening as she went a career-best 4:18.71 in the 400 IM. The time was the fourth-fastest in school history and an NCAA B cut time.
Bradley started things off by winning the 200 freestyle with a career-best 1:51.82. Her time of 2:22.75 in the 200 breaststroke was also a career-best and the ninth-fastest time in school history.
Taflinger continued her impressive season claiming two individual victories. The Kokomo, Ind., native posted a career-best and the third-fastest time in school history in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:02.08) on her way to victory. Sarah Fiden placed second in a time of 10:02.53.
Taflinger won the 200-yard breastroke with a time of 2:21.00. She pulled off one of the most difficult meets for a swimmer starting out with the 1000 freestyle and finishing with the 400 IM. Talfinger was third in the IM at 4:20.85.
Fiden led a contingent of four Hoosiers at the top of the 500-yard freestyle. The 2003 All-American had a season-best time of 4:57.78. Torpey also broke the five-minute mark coming in second with a time of 4:59.67.
Senior Meghan Medendorp led the way for the Hoosiers in the sprint event as she took first with season-bests in both the 50-yard (23.69) and 100-yard (51.46) freestyles.
Senior Greer McGettrick (100 breast) and freshman Leila Vaziri (100 back) each picked up individual victories for the Hoosiers as well. Vaziri also took second in the 200 backstroke at 2:04.84, the eighth-fastest time in school history.
In diving, freshman Lindsay Weigle led Indiana as she finished second in both the one-meter and three-meter events.
The 400-yard freestyle relay of Vaziri, freshman Annica Lofstedt, junior Erin Smith and Medendorp posted the 10th-fastest time in school history of 3:26.84 in winning the event. Indiana’s 400-yard medley relay of Vaziri, McGettrick, Smith and Medendorp started the meet.
Career Day
Sophomore Kristen Bradley had a career day as the Hoosiers dominated No. 19 Notre Dame in Bloomington, 176-124.
Bradley set career-bests in the 200 freestyle (1:51.82), 200 breaststroke (2:22.75) and the 400 IM (4:18.71).
She won the 200 freestyle and 400 IM agianst the Irish, while placing second in the 200 breaststroke. Her time in the 400 IM was the fourth-fastest in school history as well as an NCAA B qualifying time. Bradley’s time in the 200 breaststroke was the ninth-fastest in school history.
Top 10 School History
The Hooisers have placed 11 different times in the top 10 in school histroy. Nine of the times came from individuals, while two were from relays. Here is a look at the times that rank among the top 10:

Streaking
The Indiana women’s swimming and diving team has won three-straight dual meets and 11 of their last 12 matchups dating back to the 2001-02 season. The Hoosiers lone blemish during that stretch was a 195.5-173.5 loss at Penn State.
The Hoosiers have also won five straight in Bloomington.
Big Ten Swimmer of the Week
Senior Brooke Taflinger was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for the week of Oct. 18. She led the way for the Hoosiers, claiming three victories in the 1,000-yard freestyle, the 200-yard breaststroke and the 400-yard IM against Evansville. Her time of 10:02.47 in the 1,000 was a career-best and the third- fastest time in school history. Taflinger currently hold three school records for the Hoosiers in the 200-yard and 400-yard IM as well as the 200-yard breaststroke.
Big Ten Diver of the Week
Freshman Lindsay Weigle was named Big Ten Diver of the Week for her performance in her first collegiate meet for the week of Oct. 18. Weigle led the Hoosier divers by claiming wins on both the one-meter and three-meter competitions. She notched the one-meter victory with a score of 273.67 points and won the three-meter with a score of 255.60, over 20 points better than her second- place competition. During her prep career, Weigle won Junior National Championshps in 2002 and 2003 on the three-meter.
Freshmen Impact
The Hoosiers freshman crop has had a solid beginning to the 2003-04 season. IU freshmen played big roles in the Hoosiers’ third-place finishes at both the Indiana Intercollegiates and SMU Classic.
Freshman Leila Vaziri had three impressive times at the SMU Classic placing her among the top 10 in Indiana history. She placed third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.10, but her best 100 backstroke time came as part of the 400-yard medley relay. In the relay, Vaziri led off with a 56.97, which is the fourth-fastest 100 backstroke time in school history.
The Coral Springs, Fla., native placed eighth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.00, which was the ninth-fastest 200 backstroke time in school history. Vaziri also led off the 400-yard medley relay with a 100-yard freestyle time of 51.45. The time is a Hoosier season-best as well as the eighth-fastest time in school history.
Freshman Annica Lofstedt had a solid showing at the Indiana Intercollegiates. The Orebo, Sweden, native won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.01. The time was the ninth-fastest 100 butterfly time in school history. She also took second in the 50-yard freestyle and swam a leg in the Hoosiers second place 200-yard freestyle relay.
Freshman diver Lindsay Weigle has also had a good start to the season. Weigle was the lone diver to travel to the SMU Classic, and she took fourth in both the one-meter and three-meter competitions. The Bloomington, Ind., native started the season off by winning both events against Evansville and garnering Big Ten Diver-of-the-Week honors.
