Hoosiers Roll in Dual Action

Bloomington, Ind. - Concluding a full weekend of action, the Indiana wrestling team turned in a dominating effort, going 3-0 in three dual matches. The Hoosiers defeated Wabash, 38-12, Eastern Illinois, 32-13 and Gardner-Webb, 37-13. IU is now 5-1 in dual meets this season, rebounding from Saturday's tough loss to eighth-ranked Missouri.
"I thought we wrestled real well," said IU head coach Duane Goldman. "Cameron Sakon and J.P. Stanley really stepped in for the team and did a good job along with Nick Spatola. I think Pat DeGain looked real good today. He looked like he picked it up the whole weekend."
Five Hoosiers swept three matches as the Hoosiers cruised in their second home meet of the season. Sophomore Joe Dubuque got IU off to a quick start, going 3-0 with two pins and a technical fall. The Bloomfield, N.J., native has reeled off 11 straight victories, improving to 12-2 this season at 125 pounds and a perfect 6-0 in dual meets.
"Joe looked good today," said Goldman. "He really showed what he is capable of doing."
Sophomore Cameron Sakon won his three matches at 141. After going 4-2 at the Missouri Open on Nov. 23, Sakon returned to the mat delivering two pins and giving the Hoosiers a boost in the early-going.
Coyte Cooper moved his unbeaten streak to 16 after rolling through his three matches. Despite wrestling at a higher weight (149), the senior picked up his seventh and eighth pins and fourth major decision of the season. The fifth-ranked wrestler in the nation is a perfect 16-0 this season and is 6-0 in dual meets.
"I feel good about the way I'm wrestling," said Cooper. "I'm just trying to concentrate on staying relaxed and just having fun. Because of that, I think I'm doing well."
At 184 pounds, junior Andy Rios captured three wins, defeating Keith Garrard of Wabash, 21-11, pinning Brandon Beach of Gardner-Webb and picking up a victory by forfeit against Eastern Illinois. Rios, the 14th-ranked wrestler in the country, is 5-1 in dual meets and 12-2 overall.
Finally, No. 11 Pat DeGain won for the fourth time this weekend. The junior carded three victories and moves to 11-2 this season with a perfect 5-0 record in dual meets.
The Hoosiers are off for the Holiday season and return to action Jan. 3, 2004 when they travel to Columbus, Ohio, for the Buckeye Duals.
