IU Concludes Successful UNI Open

Cedar Falls, Iowa - Heading into an event with over 300 wrestlers and several top teams from the Big Ten and Big 12, the Indiana wrestling team came out with impressive results. Four Hoosiers captured individual titles and nine IU grapplers finished in the top six in their weight classes at the Northern Iowa Open.
Sophomore Joe Dubuque captured his first collegiate title, sweeping five straight matches en route to the championship at 125 pounds. The Bloomfield, N.J., native defeated the fourth seed, Chris Helegessen of Northern Iowa, 11-6 in the championship match.
Coyte Cooper collected his second title of the season and won the 141-pound weight class at the Northern Iowa Open for the second straight season. The fifth-ranked wrestler in the nation at 141 pounds dropped second-seeded Jason Rhoten from Minnesota State 9-4 in the finals. After winning six matches on the day, the senior is a perfect 12-0 on the season with six pins and three major decisions.
The third victorious Hoosier of the tournament was junior Andy Rios. Rios rolled off four consecutive victories on his way to winning the championship at 184 pounds. This performance comes off the heels of Rios' second-place finish at the Missouri Open. The Strongsville, Ohio, native is off to a 9-1 start this season.
Junior Pat DeGain was the fourth and final Hoosier to earn an individual title. DeGain won the title at 197 pounds after downing third-seeded Josh Jandusek from Minnesota State, 7-4. DeGain won four matches, and currently rides a five-match winning streak and a 7-2 overall record.
Seeing his first action of the season freshman Brian Dyer turned in a strong performance. Dyer finished fifth place in the 133-pound weight division. Despite dropping his first match, the Naperville, Ill., native rebounded with five victories in a row before losing his final two matches to Mack Reiter of Minnesota and the third seed, Pat Garcia of Northern Iowa.
Matt McIntire continued IU's impressive run with a fourth-place finish at 149. The freshman took his first three matches before he lost in the quarterfinals to seventh-seeded Anton Dietzen from Illinois, 5-4. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native came back with three more victories before falling to Dietzen once again, 3-1.
In the 157-pound weight class, junior J.P. Stanley finished in sixth place, losing to the fourth seed, Cory Connell. Stanley went 6-3 on the day, moving to 10-4 this season.
Sophomore Brady Richardson continued his hot start to the 2003-04 campaign, finishing runner-up at 174. The Vincennes, Ind., native lost in the championship match to top-seeded Eric Hauan out of Northern Iowa, 11-2. Richardson won his first three matches, finishing the day 3-1 and improving to 8-3 on the young season.
Completing the event for Indiana was sophomore heavyweight Joel Powers. Powers, the fifth seed, captured fifth place with his defeat of Northern Iowa's Michael Shedek.
Up next, IU heads back to Columbia, Mo., for a dual meet with the Missouri Tigers at 1:00 p.m. on Sat., Dec. 13. The Hoosiers return home the next afternoon and host Gardner Webb, Eastern Illinois and Wabash. The action takes place at University Gym with match time slated for noon.
