Hoosiers Get First Big Ten Win

Bloomington, Ind.- The Indiana wrestling team ended a four-match losing skid and picked up its first Big Ten victory over Northwestern, 28-9, Friday night. Indiana improved to 16-7 on the season and 1-4 in the Big Ten conference. The Hoosiers won 7 of the 10 matches contested.
"It is good to get back on track with a win against a Big Ten team, which is always a challenge," Indiana head coach Duane Goldman said. "Even some of our guys like Isaac Knable showed a lot of guts in his match even though he lost. He wrestled a good kid, which was one of their best kids into overtime. Brady Richardson came through. I was really pleased with a lot of aspects of the match. We are looking forward to more. Right now in the Big Ten any win is a good win, and we have to use it to the fullest."
At 125, redshirt freshman and No. 13 ranked Joe Dubuque returned the to mat for the first time in three matches. Dubuque started IU out on the right foot with a decision over Northwestern's John Velez. Dubuque led 7-2 entering the third period before Velez roared back closing the gap to 9-7. Dubuque was able to hold him off and improve to 23-4 on the season.
"It was good to have Joey (Dubuque) back in the lineup," Goldman said. "You could tell he has been away for a little while. He was looking a little rusty, but it was good to have him back in there."
Senior 133-pounder Greg Schaefer continued the Hoosier roll with a dominating 13-2 win over Jon Ott. Schaefer had almost four minutes of riding time and led throughout after a takedown only nine seconds in the first period. Schaefer upped mark to 24-6 on the season.
Sixth-ranked Coyte Cooper picked up his 31st victory of the season with a 4-0 win over John Giacche to increase Indiana's led to 10-0. After a scoreless first and second periods, Cooper got an escape ten seconds into the third and a take down 30 seconds in. With the riding time of over three minutes, the final margin was 4-0. Cooper improved to 4-1 in the conference and 22-1 in dual meets.
Down 10-0, Northwestern responded by winning the next three matches to close the gap to 10-9. The Wildcats won matches at 149, 157 and 165. One of the Northwestern wins came by one point and another came in overtime.
Freshman Matt Cooper lost a tough 3-2 decision to Josh Ballard of Northwestern at 149. Trailing 3-1 entering the third period, Cooper got an escape to close the gap to 3-2. The rest of the match went scoreless and Ballard claimed the 3-2 win.
Freshman Isaac Knable also dropped a tough match at 157, this one a 7-5 decision in overtime to Mike Kimberlin. Knable evened the match at two with an escape early in the second period. Kimberlin responded with a takedown to recapture the lead, 4-2. Knable then escaped to close the gap to 4-3 at the end of the second. Kimberlin opened a 5-3 lead with an escape early in the third. Knable look as though he may have the pin with 1:30 left in the match, but Kimblerin was able to roll though. With less than 10 seconds left, Knable took down Kimberlin to even it up at five. Kimberlin was able to take Knable down midway through the first OT for the win.
Junior Alex LaPointe dropped a 12-5 decision to Jason Erwinski at 165. LaPointe was able to escape with less than a minute remaining to prevent the major decision.
At 174, freshman Brady Richardson got the Hoosiers back on track with a 3-1 decision over Andrew Curran. Richardson got an escape in the second and Curran got one in the third to even the match up at one. With 13 seconds remaining in the third period, Richardson took down Curran and road it out for the victory. The Vincennes, Ind., native improved to 17-8 on the season, including a 2-2 mark in the Big Ten.
Eighth-ranked Ty Matthews won his 18th straight match with a 9-3 decision over Brendan Curran. After an early takedown by Curran, Matthews responded by reeling off the next eight points, including three takedowns. Matthews upped his mark to 21-3 on the year, including a 17-0 record at 184 pounds.
Sophomore Pat DeGain picked up his ninth pin over Matt Delguyd, 2:05 into the first period. DeGain took down Delguyd early in the first and finally pinned him almost a minute left. DeGain improved to 28-3 on the year and 3-1 in the Big Ten.
Freshman Joel Powers got his first win in the Big Ten with a forfeit victory over Northwestern at heavyweight. Powers is now 19-11 on the year.
The Hoosiers will next be in action Sunday afternoon when they travel to Champaign, Ill. to battle the Illinois Fighting Illini. The match carries a 1:00 p.m. start time. Illinois is ranked eighth in the nation and has a 9-3 mark overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten.
