Hoosiers To Face Iowa and Minnesota

The Hoosiers enter the weekend coming off their first conference victory. Indiana defeated the Northwestern Wildcats, 28-9 on Fri., Feb. 14 in Bloomington. The weekend ahead will be a challenge for IU as the Hoosiers face the No. 2 Iowa Hawkeyes and the No. 3/4 Minnesota Golden Gophers.
IU faces the Iowa Hawkeyes for the 33rd time in school history on Feb. 21 at University Gymnasium in Bloomington, Ind., at 7 p.m. The Hoosiers have won just once when hosting the Hawkeyes and have only been able to better the Hawkeyes on three different occasions since 1926. The three victories came in 1965, and two in 1967. The last time the teams faced off was Feb. 17, 2002 in Iowa City. The Hoosiers lost that match, 26-12. The last time the Hawkeyes were in Bloomington, they defeated the Hoosiers 37-6.
Nine of Iowa's 10 starters are ranked 13th or better in their respective weight classes. Two Hawkeyes are ranked No. 1 in the nation as Jessman Smith at 184 pounds and Steve Mocco at heavyweight both hold the top ranking in the country in this week's poll.
The Hoosiers wrap up their regular season on Sun., Feb. 23 in Minneapolis, Minn.. against the Gophers.
The Matchups
125 -Redshirt freshman Joe Dubuque boasts a 23-4 record and is 1-1 in the Big Ten this season. He has been forced to sit out some key matches due to injury but maintains a No. 16 national ranking despite injury. Dubuque will face Iowa's No. 8 Luke Moffitt. Moffitt holds a season record of 18-5. Sunday in Minneappolis, Dubuque will face Bobbe Lowe who holds a 12-14 record, 3-4 in the Big Ten.
133 - Fifth-year senior Greg Schaefer holds a 24-6 season record and will face third-ranked junior Cliff Moore, who boasts a 23-6 record. Schaefer will then face a tough road test as the team heads to Minneaplis, Minn., and the home of the country's top wrestler at 133 pounds, Ryan Lewis. Lewis is 24-2 on the season and 7-0 in the Big Ten.
141 - Junior Coyte Cooper has enjoyed success this season, compiling an overall record of 31-2. He has 16 pins on the season, ranking second on Indiana's all-time pins list. He is currently ranked sixth in the nation. He will face Iowa senior Luke Moffitt who has an 18-10 season record. Minnesota's No. 17 Derek Phillips is 6-1 both on the season and in the conference.
149 - True freshman Matt Cooper - one of three true freshmen in IU's lineup - will face No. 12 Ty Eustice. Cooper's season record of 15-16 will go against redshirt freshman Eustice's 22-6 record. Cooper will then face Minnesota's No. 2, Jared Lawrence. Lawrence boasts a season record of 23-2.
157 - IU could pit one of two wrestlers against No. 9 redshirt freshman Joe Johnston. True freshman Isaac Knable is 8-10 on the season while sophomore J.P. Stanley has a season record of 3-9. Minnesota will bring its No. 2 Luke Becker to the mat. A senior, Becker holds a season record of 19-3. Becker lost to Iowa's Johnston on Feb. 14.
165 - Hoosier junior Alex LaPointe will face one of two Iowa wrestlers. Jason D'Agata has a 5-15 record while Adam Fellers has a 10-8 record on the season. LaPointe holds a season record of 9-19. Minnesota's No. 5 Jacob Volkmann holds a 22-5 season record , coming off wins over Iowa's Jason D'Agata and Wisconsin's Kelly Flaherty.
174 - One of two Hoosiers will face Iowa's No. 4 Tyler Nixt, who holds a 22-3 season record. Redshirt freshman Brady Richardson has a 17-8 season record and picked up the second Big Ten victory of his career on Feb. 14 against Northwestern. Junior Andrew Wolf could also step up for the Hoosiers as he boasts an 11-11 record. Minnesota's Josh McLay fell from the rankings this week after losing to Nixt over the weekend. McLay holds a season record of 14-13, 3-4 in the conference.
184 - Senior Ty Matthews is undefeated at 184 pounds and will face the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the country at 184, Jessman Smith. Matthews is ranked eighth with an overall season record of 21-3, though he is 17-0 at 184. Smith holds a season record of 27-1. Matthews is 0-2 against Smith in their careers. Matthews will square off against either Minnesota's Matt Nagel or Casey Flaherty on Sunday. Nagel lost to Jessman Smith on Feb. 14 while Flaherty was pinned by Wisconsin's Ralph DeNisco on Feb. 16.
197 - Sophomore and No. 7 Pat DeGain will face Iowa's No. 13 Ryan Fulsaas. Fulsaas has a season record of 19-9 to DeGain's 28-3 mark. DeGain is 4-1 against ranked competitors this season. DeGain will face another tough, ranked competitor in Minnesota's No. 9 Damion Hahn on Sunday. Hahm holds a season record of 11-3 and dropped his first Big Ten dual to Iowa's Ryan Fulsaas on Feb. 14.
HWT - Freshman Joel Powers will face his toughest competition of the season as the top-ranked heavyweight in the nation arrives in Bloomington. Iowa's Steve Mocco boasts a 26-0 record while Powers has a 19-11 overall record. Powers will continue facing ranked competitors as he'll see the Gophers' No. 7 Garrett Lowney who holds an 8-4 season record. The last five heavyweights that the true freshman has faced have been ranked in the top 15 in the nation.
Hawkeye Connections
Hoosier head coach Duane Goldman graduated from Iowa in 1986 where he received his bachelor of general studies. He wrestled for the Hawkeyes from 1983-86, amassing a 132-10 career record. He was a four-time All-American, four-time Big Ten Champion and a four-time NCAA Finalist. In 1986 he was the NCAA Champion at 190 pounds. From 1987-89 he served as a graduate assistant for the Hawkeyes.
Assistant coach Mike Mena is also an alum of Iowa as he earned his bachelor's degree in art in 1997. He was a four-time All-American with a career record of 118-24. He was Big Ten Champion in 1995. He was a part of three national championship teams and was a co-captain in 1997.
