IU Loses Decision To Iowa

Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana Hoosier wrestling gave the No. 2 Iowa wrestling team a tough Big Ten battle Friday at University Gymnasium in Bloomington, Ind. Although the Hawkeyes pulled the team scoring to a distinct 34-3, the team score doesn't show how close the Hoosiers came in the individual competition. Only three bouts of the entire match were more than decisions. Junior Coyte Cooper had the Hoosiers' only victory at 141 pounds as the No. 6 ranked Cooper got the 2-1 decision over Iowa's Luke Moffitt.
With the victory, Iowa improves to 16-3, 6-1 in the Big Ten while the Hoosiers drop to 16-8, 1-5 in the conference.
Redshirt freshman Joe Dubuque got the first points of the match with a takedown of Iowa's No. 8 Luke Eustice in the 125 pound bout. But Dubuque, maintaining a No. 16 national ranking himself, could not maintain the lead. At the end of the first period, Dubuque held the slim 2-1 advantage. At the end of the second period, only a takedown separated the competitors as Eustice held the 4-2 advantage. Eustice outscored Dubuque 6-3 in the third period to grab the 10-5 decision.
133 pound senior Greg Schaefer, wrestling in his final match in University Gymnasium, and Iowa's No. 3 Cliff Moore were scoreless after the first period. Following Dubuque's lead, Schaefer got the first points of the match but by the end of the second, Moore held the 5-2 advantage. With a takedown in the third and over a minute of riding time, Moore held on to take the 8-3 final decision and put his Hawkeye team up, 6-0.
Junior Coyte Cooper then got to work at 141 pounds, determined to continue his winning streak. At the end of the first period, Cooper owned the 2-1 advantage and the grapplers held each other scoreless for the remaining two periods as Cooper carried out the 2-1 win. Coyte extends his winning streak to eight matches as he improves to 32-2 on the season and 5-1 in the Big Ten.
Younger brother Matt Cooper has been steadily improving at 149 pounds as the Big Ten Tournament approaches in Madison, Wis., on March 8-9 and his performance against No. 12 Ty Eustice is proof. Although for the first time of the match an Indiana wrestler did not get the first points of the bout, Cooper kept things close. At the end of the first, Cooper was down, 1-2 but immediately scored early in the second to tie things up at 2-2. By the end of the second, the score was 4-3 in favor of Eustice. The only point in the third period came as Eustice got one point for an escape. Cooper battled through to the end, nearly scoring the two points he needed to send the match into overtime. Ultimately, Eustice held on just long enough for the 5-3 win.
Three true freshmen have consistently started for the Hoosiers this season. Matt Cooper is in his first season of collegiate competition as is 157 pound Isaac Knable - heavyweight Joel Powers is the other. Knable got the first takedown of the 157 matchup against Iowa's No. 9 Joe Johnston. Johnston scored nearly immediately on the escape and then countered with a takedown of his own for two points and the advantage. By the end of the first period, Johnston held only a slight 8-7 advantage. Johnston pulled away late in the second, putting the score at 23-13 by the end of the match for the four-point major decision to put the Hawkeyes up, 13-3.
Junior Alex LaPointe could not find his first Big Ten win of the season over Iowa's Jason D'Agata, losing by an 8-5 decision in the 165 pound matchup. At 174 pounds, redshirt freshman Brady Richardson faced No. 4 Tyler Nixt and was defeated by technical fall, 24-8 with 2:42 remaining in the third period.
The No. 1 wrestler in the nation at 184 pounds held on to his top spot as he defeated Indiana's No. 8 Ty Matthews by major decision, 11-3. With the four- point loss in team scoring, the Hawkeyes maintained a 25-3 advantage. The loss is the first of the season at 184 pounds for Matthews. He had not lost a match since Nov. 30 against Rider's Vinny D'Agostino in a heavyweight bout.
Then came the upset as Iowa's No. 13 Ryan Fulsaas defeated Indiana's No. 7 Pat DeGain. Despite the upset, it was a thrilling match, going down to the wire as Fulsaas won the 6-5 decision. Heading into the third and final period of the 197 pound match, DeGain held the 4-3 advantage. Fulsaas turned it on in the third as he got the escape early to tie things at 4-4. With one takedown with a minute and a half remaining, Fulsaas held off DeGain for the decision. The loss is only DeGain's third of the season and just the second dual meet loss of the year. Both duals losses have come in the Big Ten, the other was to Ohio State's then-No. 7 Anton Talamantes in another upset match.
In the final match, another top-ranked wrestler took to the mat as Iowa's Steve Mocco squared off with IU freshman Joel Powers. Mocco pinned Powers in 1:24 in the heavyweight matchup.
The Hoosiers travel to Minnesota to face the Golden Gophers on Sun., Feb. 23 at 12:30 p.m. EST.
