Hoosiers Fall To Minnesota

Minneapolis, Minn. - The Indiana wrestling team wrapped up its regular season Sunday in Minneapolis, Minn., falling 25-17 to the No. 3/4 Golden Gophers. The Hoosiers end the season with an overall mark of 16-9, 1-6 in the Big Ten. The team will have nearly two weeks rest until the Big Ten Championships in Madison, Wis., on March 8 & 9.
The match began with the Gophers jumping to an early 3-0 lead with Hoosier freshman Joel Powers facing his seventh-straight ranked competitor in Minnesota's No. 7 Garrett Lowney. Lowney decisioned Powers, 9-5, to give the Gophers the early lead.
After battling a nagging knee injury for the majority of the Big Ten schedule, redshirt freshman No. 16 Joe Dubuque was set to get the win over UM's Bobbe Lowe. The high-scoring match ended suddenly when, after a scramble, Lowe picked up IU's Dubuque and dropped him on his head. Dubuque lay motionless on the mat for several minutes before the match was called. At the time of the injury default, Dubuque led 8-6.
Senior Greg Schaefer then faced the nation's number one 133 pound wrestler in Ryan Lewis. The Gophers kept the streak going with Lewis' 8-2 decision.
Sixth-ranked junior Coyte Cooper got the Hoosiers on the board with a 14-8 decision of Minnesota's No. 11 Derek Phillips. Cooper held the advantage in the majority of the bout.
Matt Cooper then squred off with No. 2 Jared Lawrence, dropping a major decision to Minnesota, 16-6.
In the first Big Ten win of his career and the first Big Ten win at 157 pounds for IU this season, freshman Isaac Knable pinned Minnesota's Tyler Marr in 2:29 to add six points to the team scoring for IU to pull with six points, 16-9.
At 165 pounds, junior Alex LaPointe fell to Minnesota's No. 7 Jacob Volkmann in 5:50.
Redshirt freshman Brady Richardson then pulled off the upset of a ranked competitor as he won the 3-1 decision over No. 20 Josh McLay. The Hoosiers trailed 22-12 in team scoring.
No. 8 Ty Matthews then scored the second straight individual victory for the Hoosiers as he defeated Matt Nagel by technical fall, 17-1 in 4:03 to put the Hoosiers in range for the team win at 22-17.
No. 7 Pat DeGain could not pull out the win the Hoosiers needed at 197, dropping his second straight Big Ten match, the first time this season he has lost two straight. Minnesota's No. 10 Damion Hahn earned the 4-3 decision to put the match away, 25-17.
