IU Drops Titan Series Point

Bloomington, Ind. - In a heated Titan Series matchup, the Indiana Hoosiers were unable to get the best of the Purdue Boilermakers, losing 30-15. Despite the overall team loss, 141 pound and No. 6 Coyte Cooper got his 30th win of the season and the 74th of his career when he pinned Purdue's Doug Withstandley.
"Overall, I thought we wrestled well - we wrestled aggressively," said head coach Duane Goldman. "We need some work, some of the guys looked tired out there. I'm not disappointed in the way we wrestled. Of course I want to win, but I'm not disappointed at all."
Sorely missing redshirt freshman Joe Dubuque, out with a knee injury, the Hoosiers were forced to forfeit the 125 pound match.
Indiana native and senior Greg Schaefer opened things up for IU as he decisioned Rene Hernandez for his 80th career victory. The 8-5 decision was good for three points in team scoring, leaving the Hoosiers with just a three-point deficit. Schaefer improves to 17-5 in dual meets on the season and 23-6 overall.
Cooper then pulled things even tighter when he pinned Withstandley in 4:30 to put the Hoosiers ahead for the only time of the evening, 9-6. The pin is the 16th of the season for Cooper, moving him into a second place tie with former Hoosier standout Viktor Sveda for the most pins in a season. The pin also marked the 26th of his career, moving him into a two-way, fifth-place tie with Bill Paxton who pinned 26 competitors from 1983-86.
Freshman Matt Cooper nearly found a way to break his losing skid against Purdue's No. 18 Dan Jankowski in the 149-pound matchup. After the first period, neither grappler had found the scoreboard. The second period left Cooper within range of the win at 4-1, but ultimately Jankowski won the match 7-3 to tie the meet.
The Hoosiers then suffered three tough setbacks as freshman Isaac Knable was pinned by the Boilermakers' Clovis Crane in 2:39. At 165 and 174, both Purdue wrestlers were ranked sixth in the country. At 165, LaPointe gave up just four points in the18-6 major decision as redshirt freshman Brady Richardson was defeated, 25-7.
At 184 pounds, No. 8 Ty Matthews won by decision over Ben Wissel, improving his record at 184 to a perfect 16-0. The victory is the 20th of the season overall.
With ninth-ranked Pat DeGain out with the flu, redshirt freshman Andy Rios stepped up to the challenge and a weight class to face Bryan Kapp. Friday marks the first match Rios has wrestled at 197 pounds as he wrestles 184 for IU. Out of his weight class, Rios got the first Big Ten win of his career, improving to 12-6 on the season.
Ignoring the weight difference, Rios won by decision, 12-5 to bring the Hoosiers to within nine points in the team scoring as the Boilers still led, 24-15.
In the final bout of the evening, freshman Joel Powers was searching for his first career victory in Big Ten action. In the first minute and a half, Powers nearly had it. No. 15 Israel Blevins found himself virtually pinned to the mat as the two struggled through the entire first period with Powers holding the distinct advantage. When the first period ended, Powers owned 1:47 of riding time.
With time winding down in the third period, Powers fell to Blevins.
"Joel wrestled really well," said Goldman. "He just needs to learn how to close the match and he will be a really tough competitor."
The Hoosiers fall to 15-7 overall and 0-4 in Big Ten action while the Boilermakers improve to 12-3, 1-2 in the conference.
IU next hosts Northwestern at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14 at University Gymnasium in Bloomington.
