Two Hoosier wrestlers will take to the mat for the final tournament of their collegiate careers as seniors Greg Schaefer and Ty Matthews compete in Kansas City, Mo., at the 2003 NCAA Wrestling Championships. Hoosier junior Coyte Cooper also earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships by placing second at the Big Ten Championships on March 9, 2003 in Madison, Wis.

Greg Schaefer • Senior • 133 Pounds • 26-10 Overall, 83-40 Career
Schaefer qualified for the NCAA Championships this season, earning his spot by placing seventh in the Big Ten at the Championships on March 9. This is the third consecutive season Schaefer has qualified for the national tournament but the first time he has earned his spot as he was a wild card entry in both 2001 and `02 at 125 pounds. Schaefer ended the regular season with an 18-8 dual meet record and a 3-4 mark in the Big Ten.
Coyte Cooper • Junior • 141 Pounds • 35-3 Overall, 79-28 Career
Cooper advances to the national championships for the third time in as many tries. After redshirting his true freshman season at Indiana, Cooper qualified in 2001 and 2002, both seasons at 141 pounds. This year he boasts an 18-match undefeated stretch, spanning from Nov. 30 through Jan. 18 when he lost to evenutal Big Ten Champion, Penn State's Scott Moore. Cooper is 4-2 against ranked opponents this season and his only two losses since Nov. 30 have come against Moore. Cooper moved into fith on the all-time pins list and is second on the season pins list with 16, while two-time All-American Viktor Sveda holds the record with 19.
Ty Matthews • Senior • 184 Pounds • 24-5 Overall, 82-36 Career
Matthews returns to the NCAA Championships after sitting out the majority of the 2001-02 season with injury. He has now qualified for the national championships three times, this is the secona t184 pounds. In 2000 Matthews qualified for NCAAs at 184 pounds and in 2001 he wrestled at 197. This season, he wrestled at both 197 and heavyweight before settling at 184. With five losses on the season, only one of those losses came during the regular dual meet season. Heading into the Big Ten Championships, Matthews boasted an 18-1 record with the lone loss coming at the hands of top-ranked Jessman Smith of Iowa. He finished the conference championships third, a best-ever performance.
