NCAA Championship Seedings Announced

Kansas City, Mo. - The initial pairings of the NCAA Wrestling Championships have been announced. Hoosier seniors Greg Schaefer and Ty Matthews may both face Cal-Poly competitors while Coyte Cooper faces Northern Illinois' Josh Wooten.
The Hoosiers departed Tuesday morning for Kansas City, Mo. And the 2003 NCAA Championships. Wrestling is set to begin at noon on Thursday, March 20 at Kemper Arena.
Schaefer boasts a 26-10 overall record and is making his third trip to the national tournament. He will face the winner of the Travis Drake (Appalachian State) vs. Nate Ybarra (Cal Poly) bout. Drake, a senior from Cheraw, South Carolina was the 2003 Southern Conference champion at 133 pounds. He boasts a 27-8 overall record and went a perfect 5-0 in the conference. Ybarra finished fourth in the PAC-10 as a sophomore this season.
Cooper earned a No. 11 pre-seed and will face Josh Wooton of Northern Illinois. Wooton earned second place honors in the MAC conference this season as a freshman as he lost to Central Michigan's Jason Mester, the 141-pound No. 4 seed. He enters the match with a 26-10 overall record. Cooper boasts a record of 35-3. Earlier this season, Cooper earned a 13-4, major decision over Wooton at the Buckeye Duals on Jan. 4. Wooton then held a No. 17 national ranking.
Matthews will face a Cal Poly grappler as the PAC-10 champion, freshman Ryan Halsey will be Matthews' competition. Matthews earned a No. 8 seed in the tournament with his 24-5 record on the season.
