Session One Results; Cooper Remains on Championship Path

Heading into the second round of the NCAA Championships, Cooper and 2003 Big Ten Champion, Penn State's Scott Moore, were the Big Ten Conference's last bid for a national champion at 141 pounds. Moore also fell in the second round to Army's Phillip Simpson.
Cooper will face Michigan State's Ryan L'Amoreaux in the wrestlebacks Friday morning.
Senior Greg Schaefer remained alive in his bid for All-American honors by defeating The Citadel's Sean Markey by major decision, 17-7. He will face Sacred Heart's Jason Cucola in the next round of the wrestlebacks on Friday morning. Schaefer improves to 27-11 on the season.
Senior Ty Matthews was eliminated from competition Thursday night in a 3-1, sudden victory loss to Northern Iowa's Jordan Holm. Matthews ends the season with a 24-7 overall record.
Schaefer and Cooper continue their quest for All-American honors Friday in the NCAA Championship wrestlebacks.

Hoosier Update After First Round of NCAA Championships>
Kansas City, Mo. - The 2003 NCAA Wrestling Championships began Thursday afternoon as three Hoosier grapplers represent Indiana in Kansas City, Mo.
Junior Coyte Cooper is the only Hoosier remaining in the championship bracket as he won a 13-3 decision over Northern Illinois' Josh Wooten in the first bout of the championships. He now faces Lockhaven's Mike Maney in the second round, slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night.
Seniors Greg Schaefer and Ty Matthews each lost their first bouts and fall to the consolation bracket. Wrestleback action is set to begin Tuesday evening at 6:30.
Schaefer faced Appalachian State's Travis Drake and lost by an 11-4 decision. He will face The Citadel's Sean Markey in the first round of the wrestle-backs.
Matthews squared off against Cal-Poly's Ryan Halsey, losing by a 10-2 major decision in the 184-pound match.
Each Hoosier wrestler has kept the possibility alive to be the first Hoosier All-American (top eight national finisher) since Viktor Sveda and Kevin Stanley in 2001.
The second round of the championships and the opening round of the wrestlebacks will begin at 6:30 and should be completed no later than 11:00 p.m. Tuesday night.
