HOOSIERS TURN IN SOLID FINAL DAY AT 2003 NCAA SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Indiana Places Three in Platform Finals
Auburn, Ala. - In what amounted to an extremely bittersweet day for the IU contingent at the 2003 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at Auburn University, Indiana placed three divers in the finals of the 10-Meter Platform competition but senior Sara Hildebrand's final quest for a NCAA individual title fell short as she finished fourth with a score of 452.15. What made the finish that much more difficult to swallow was the fact that Natalia Diea, a senior at Ohio State whom Hildebrand defeated at the 2003 Big Ten Championships one month ago, walked away with the national title. Hildebrand outscored Diea 459.05-410.15 in this morning's preliminaries but could not carry over the performance into tonight's finals. In addition to Hildebrand, junior Cassandra Cardinell (436.45) was fourth and senior Lori Matthys (402.15) finished seventh.Indiana finished 16th in the team standings with 66 points, while Auburn was dominant in winning the team title with 536 points.
While she certainly would never use it as an excuse, appropriate focus had to be difficult as Hildebrand's husband is a Marine who is currently stationed at Camp Pendleton in California.
In the pool, junior Sarah Fiden finished fifteenth in the 1,650-yard freestyle, while freshman Lauren Lubus swam to a 15th-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly.
