Meet Kelly Schuiling (3-7-03)

Bloomington, Ind. - Kelly Schuiling is currently a sophomore on the Varsity Indiana Rowing team. A native of Belmont, Mich., Kelly lettered in swimming and rowing where she took first and third at the Midwest Championships in rowing.
In the spring of Kelly's freshman year, 2002, she joined the Novice squad, posting a victory over the University of Dayton as a member of the Novice 8 boat. Kelly was also a member of the Novice 8 squad that finished sixth at the Regionals.
This past fall Kelly rowed with the Varsity where she was a member of the Varsity 8 boat that finished tied for third at the fifth annual LemonHead Regatta, placed eighth out of 59 boats at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass., and rowed in third at the Head of the Elk Regatta. Kelly also finished seventh in the doubles competition at the Head of the Rock Regatta.
Kelly was born on August 29, 1983 and is majoring in Elementary Education.
Do you have any brothers or sisters?
"I have one younger sister, Julie."
What is your favorite color?
"Black."
Who is your favorite actor?
"Mel Gibson."
What kind of music do you listen to?
"Anything and everything."
What is your favorite food?
"Anything with cheese."
Who is your favorite sports figure and team?
"Dale Earnhardt and the Michigan football team."
What is your favorite animal?
"Horses."
What is your favorite movie and why, favorite book and why?
"My favorite movie would have to be Braveheart because I just love the morals behind the story. I also like action and blood and guts so that helps. My favorite book would have to be the Bible actually because that is where I get all of my inspiration and hope."
What do you like to do in your spare time?
"Coach or row."
If you could visit anywhere in the world where would it be?
"I would love to visit Ireland or Alaska again."
What do you aspire to be or do after graduation?
"I want to be an elementary teacher and also coach crew. I am hoping to teach English in Mexico."
What three words best describe you?
"Intense, quiet and focused."
When did you start rowing?
"Sophomore year in high school."
If you had to play any other sport, what would it be and why?
"I would play football because I enjoy the intensity and control it takes to play the game."

Why did you choose to attend Indiana? What other schools did you consider and why did you eventually select IU?
"I considered many places such as Wisconsin, Washington, Michigan State, Eastern Michigan, Virginia and of course Indiana. I eventually selected Indiana because I had a great recruiting experience here and I just loved the coaching staff and it reminded me
of home (Michigan)."
What is your own personal best achievement in rowing?
"My best achievement this year by far would be how well I was able to do on my 2k and 6k times. I dropped a minute off my 6k and I just think I finally realized I can do this."
How do you deal with the early morning practices?
"Morning practices are hard. You just need to balance sleep and study time. I normally try to be in bed by 10 p.m., 11 p.m. at the latest. You get into a routine too once your body catches on its hard to not wake up at 5 a.m."
What is your favorite season of the year and why?
"My favorite season would have to be fall or spring because that's when racing season is and also because I just love the color changes of fall and then finally the smell of grass and flowers again in the spring."
