Madison, Wis. - Indiana wrestling still has its upsets, ready to put them to good use in the second session of wrestling at the University of Wisconsin Field House in Madison, Wis., at the Big Ten Conference Championships today.
Senior Ty Matthews and junior Coyte Cooper remain in the championship bracket after defeating their competitors in the quarterfinals. At 141 pounds, Cooper is the number one seed and drew a bye out of the first round and then defeated Illinois' Cal Ferry by major decision, 11-1. Matthews followed up Cooper's performance by defeating Purdue's Ben Wissel, 3-2.
The first session opened with149-pound, Anacortes, Wash., native Matt Cooper as 125-pound Joe Dubuque is sidelined with a concussion and 133-pound Greg Schaefer and 141-pound Coyte Cooper drew byes out of the first round. Matt Cooper could not start things out on a winning note, falling to Michigan's fourth-seeded Ryan Churella in 1:24. Isaac Knable could not get things rolling for IU either as he lost a decision, 19-10, to Iowa's Joe Johnston. At 165 pounds, Alex LaPointe lost to third-seeded Jacob Volkmann of Minnesota, 10-0 in the first round of wrestling.
At 174 and 184 pounds, Brady Richardson and Ty Matthews drew byes out of the first round, respectively. 197-pound Pat DeGain got the Hoosiers' first win over Penn State's Ryan Cummins to advance to the quarterfinals where he would face Ohio State's Anton Talamantes. Talamantes broke DeGain's winning streak earlier in the regular season and DeGain sough revenge. The two fought through regulation and into overtime when Talamantes was successful again with a 4-2 sudden victory. DeGain subsequently fell to the mat and is currently undergoing further evaluation to determine the extent of the knee/ankle injury suffered in overtime of that quarterfinal match. The final IU match out of the first round pitted IU's Joel Powers against Penn State's Pat Cummins. Cummins defeated Powers by fall in 2:31.
At 133 pounds, Greg Schaefer drew a bye out of the first round, only to face Penn State's fourth-seeded Josh Moore. Moore controlled the scoring while Schaefer looked for the opportunity. It was not to be as Moore won the decision, 7-0. With the loss, Schaefer moved to the consolation bracket where he will face Michigan's Shaun Newton.
