HOOSIER DUO EARNS BERTH TO WORLD DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN BARCELONA
Athens, Ga. – Very soon the rest of the world will again recognize what we in Bloomington have known for a long time -- Dr. Jeff Huber’s divers are among the best anywhere. As a result of their first-place showing in 3-Meter Synchro at today’s World Championship Trials at the University of Georgia, senior Sara Hildebrand (Roseville, Minn.) and junior Cassandra Cardinell (Loudonville, N.Y.) will represent the United States at the 10th FINA World Championships, July 13-20, in Barcelona, Spain. Additionally, they will also dive in the FINA/USA Diving Grand Prix, May 8-11, at The Woodlands, Texas.Cardinell and Hildebrand (formerly Reiling), a 2000 Olympian, won the women's Synchronized 3-Meter competition with 532.92 points.
In addition to Hildebrand and Cardinell, former IU standout Kimiko Hirai Soldati, along with her Synchro partner Michell Davison, finished third (516.90), while Bloomington South senior and IU signee Lindsay Weigle, partnered with IU senior Lori Matthys finished fifth. Only the top team earns a berth at the World Championships.
On the men’s side, former University of Texas divers Justin Dumais and Troy Dumais finished first in the 3-Meter Platform event with 648.84 points, while Indiana senior Marc Carlton and freshman Brian Mariano finished fourth (542.34).
Day two of the World Championship Trials continues Friday at the University of Georgia Gabrielson Natatorium with the men's synchronized 3-meter preliminary (11 a.m.) and women's synchronized platform preliminary (1 p.m.). The finals begin at 6 p.m. with the men's synchro 3-meter final leading off and the women's synchro platform final following.
The top two male and female athletes in each individual event and the top team in each synchronized event will be named to the World Championship team. One-meter participants will be selected from team members by the coaching staff.
