HOOSIER DUO NARROWLY MISSES IMPRESSIVE SYNCHRO DOUBLE AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TRIALS
Athens, Ga. -- With their tickets to the 10th FINA World Championships, July 13-20, in Barcelona, Spain, already stamped following Thursday's first-place finish in the 3-Meter Synchro competition at the 2003 World Championship Trials, Indiana junior Cassandra Cardinell (Loudonville, N.Y.) and senior Sara Hildebrand (Roseville, Minn.) narrowly missed an impressive sweep of both synchro diving events with a second-place finish during this evening's 10-Meter Synchro competition at the University of Georgia.Laura Wilkinson, the 2000 Olympic gold medallist on platform, coupled with 15-year old phenom Brittany Viola, the daughter of former American League Cy Young Award winner Frank Viola, to win the 10-Meter Synchro title with 579.06 points, while Cardinell and Hildebrand were second (558.81). IU senior Lori Matthys and Bloomington South senior Lindsey Weigle, an Indiana signee, finished third (478.56).
On the men's side, brothers Troy, a 2000 Olympian, and Justin Dumais, both of the Woodlands, Texas, won the 3-Meter Synchro final with a score of 666.15. Indiana junior Marc Carlton and freshman Brian Mariano finished third (580.95).
Day three of the World Championship Trials continues Saturday at the University of Georgia Gabrielson Natatorium with the women's 3-meter preliminary (11 a.m.) and men's platform preliminary (1 p.m.). The finals begin at 6 p.m. with the women's 3-meter final leading off and the men's platform final following.
The top two male and female athletes in each individual event and the top team in each synchronized event will be named to the World Championship team. One-meter participants will be selected from team members by the coaching staff.
Additionally, the top four divers in each individual event and the top team in each synchronized event will compete at the FINA/USA Diving Grand Prix, May 8-11, in The Woodlands, Texas.
