IU Completes Weekend in N.J. (4-13-03)

Camden, N.J. - The Indiana rowing team completed its weekend in Camden, N.J., at the Knecht Cup Regatta in successful fashion. The Hoosiers traveled eight boats to the east coast, with four boats advancing to the Grand Finals and three boats to the Petite Finals. Every Hoosier athlete advanced to at least one final on the weekend.
"We are very proud of the whole team," head coach Mark Wilson said. "Every athlete made it into at least one final. The girls did a nice job. They were able to see teams that they have never seen before, which was a good experience for them. Overall this weekend was an excellent opportunity for the team but we still have a ways to go. We have three more weeks until Big Tens. We know that we can improve and that we can build more speed."
The Grand Finals of the Pairs competition took place Saturday, April 12. Stephanie Mast and Emily Rumschlag placed third with a time of 8:22, while Erin Koers and Danielle Bird finished sixth in a time of 9:03.
The Lightweight 4 boat of coxswain Laura Wharen, Sarah Meyer, Stephanie Weert, Becky England and Kristin Storer advanced to the Grand Finals after placing fifth in the semi-final competition. The boat finished in 8:37, good enough for sixth place.
The Indiana Quad team of Line Espedal, Margaret Clark, Kelly Schuiling and Ashley Quinn finished second (8:04) in the Grand Finals competition behind UMass B (7:53).
In the Petite Finals of the Varsity 4 event, Indiana placed fifth. Representing the Hoosiers in the Varsity 4 boat was Rebekha Archibald, Annie Lawson, Amanda Walker, Casey Schoenhoft and Christine Taylor.
The Indiana Novice team raced two boats this weekend in the Novice 8 and the Novice 4 events. Both Hoosier boats qualified for the Petite Finals, finishing third and fourth, respectively. Racing for the Novice 8 was coxswain Laura Wharen, Lauren Anderson, Katie Peiss, Ashley Airis, Amy Hoffman, Leslie Schaffer, Katie Slavik, Laura Lazaridis and Carly Schilling. The team finished the race in a time of 7:41.
The Novice 4, consisting of coxswain Maria Hernandez, Erin Keuhn, Elisabeth Benoit, Ashley Sylla and Jamy Stech, finished fourth in a time of 8:49.
The Hoosiers are back on the water Saturday, April 19 in East Lansing, Mich. Indiana will compete against Big Ten foes Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State.
