The Hoosier Rowing team will travel Saturday, April 26, to Eagle Creek in Indianapolis, Ind., for the 2003 Indianapolis Collegiate Invitational. The Indianapolis Rowing Center will co-host the event with the University of Michigan.
The race was originally open to Big 10 schools only, but was expanded this year to all collegiate crew. Women's crews are from Indiana, Eastern Michigan, Grand Valley State, University of Dayton, Murray State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Purdue, Washington University (St. Louis), Michigan State, Univ. of Colorado and Xavier.
Racing begins at 8:45 with the last race scheduled for 3:08.
BIG TEN INVITATIONAL RECAP
The Indiana women's rowing team competed in the Big Ten Invitational in East Lansing, Mich., on April 19, and faced some of the nation's best teams in Michigan and host MSU.
The day was highlighted by first place finish by the second Novice 8 boat of Maria Hernandez, Erin Kuehn, Elisabeth Benoit, Casey Fein, Katie Slavik, Ashley Sylla, Jamy Stech, Barrett Belstra and Laura Teskoski. In the first race of the day, the second Novice 8 boat posted a time of 7:23.9, defeating the Michigan Wolverines by nearly three seconds. The same boat finished just behind Michigan State in the second race of the day as the Hoosiers rowed to a time of 7:26.40 to the Spartans 7:25.94.
The first Novice 8 boat was just four seconds behind Michigan with a time of 7:14.00. The first Novice 8 boat includes Laura Wharen, Lauren Anderson, Amy Hoffman, Leslie Schaffer, Katy Dickerson, Ashley Airis, Kati Peiss, Laura Lazaridis and Carly Schilling. The same boat finished second to Michigan State with a time of 7:18.35, later in the invitational.
"Overall, all of the Indiana teams really did a very good job today," said head coach Mark Wilson. "We went up against the best competition we've seen this season. The performance of the first and second Novice boats was very solid."
The Novice 4 boat competed against rival schools' second Varsity 4 boats early in the day, finishing with a time of 9:03.5. The OSU Buckeyes, ranked 11th in the country, took first place with a time of 7:54.31. The fifth-ranked Wolverines and 10th ranked Spartans finished second and third, respectively.
The Varsity 8 boat of Becky England, Stephanie Mast, Emily Rumschlag, Line Espedal, Margaret Clark, Ashley Quinn, Kelly Schuiling, Erin Koers and Danielle Bird finished second to Michigan with a time of 6:59.03. In the final race of the day, the boat finished second to Michigan State with a time of 7:00.1.
The second Varsity 8 boat of Rebekha Archibald, Annie Lawson, Amanda Walker, Casey Schoenhoft, Christine Taylor, Amanda Tallman, Stephanie Weert, Sarah Meyer and Kristin Storer placed second to Michigan with a time of 7:24.58.
The second Varsity 8 boat continued into the afternoon, finishing second to Michigan State with a time of 7:26.14.

INDIANAPOLIS ROWING CENTER
The only community rowing Center in Indianapolis is located in Eagle Creek Park at the Eagle Creek Reservoir. The Indianapolis Rowing Center (IRC) has more than 40 boats for club use and storage space for members' rowing shells.
The 2,000-meter course on Eagle Creek Reservoir was the site of the 1994 World Rowing championships and has hosted the USRowing National Championship Regatta 11 times since 1987. The Indianapolis Rowing Center also hosts high-school and collegiate regattas in the spring and the Head of the Eagle each October.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
Purdue:
Purdue, although a club sport at the University, has developed a winning tradition. Establish in 1949, Purdue Crew Club is one of the oldest university club programs in the nation.
Purdue's first boat was donated by the University of Wisconsin, and two years later Purdue finished its season with a 2-2 record. The team draws athletes from varied sports background, with the majority of them not having any rowing experience. From this Purdue has developed a team that has defeated crews from around the nation and the world.
Purdue rowers contribute their time to provide as much as 60 percent of the club's annual operating budget through fundraising activities such as Rent-a-Rower, an annual Row-a-thon, an 8 kilometer road race around the University, and contracted work for the University and Greater Lafayette organizations.
Eastern Michigan
The Eastern Michigan University women's rowing team made it the varsity 8+ grand final at the 2003 Knecht Cup in Camden, N.J., April 13, 2003. The Eagles finished sixth in the final, coming under the wire with a time of 6:59.1.
BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Ohio State University will serve as host to the 2003 Big Ten Rowing Championships for the first time. The event is scheduled for May 3 at the Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River.
The Hoosiers will compete against Ohio State, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Last year the Ohio State captured the Big Ten title.
Michigan captured the Conference's first two rowing championship titles while OSU won last spring.
The preliminary morning heats will begin at 8 a.m., while the afternoon finals session will be held at noon. Admission is free.
