IU Successful at Indy Invite (4-28-03)

Indianapolis, Ind. - The Indiana rowing team competed on Saturday, April 26, in the Indianapolis Invitational at Eagle Creek in Indianapolis, Ind. The day was highlighted with wins by the Varsity 4A boat and the second Novice 8 squad.
The second Varsity 8 boat split into two separate boats to compete in the Varsity 4 event. In its first race of the day each boat finished second in their heat to qualify for the Grand Finals. The Varsity 4A, consisting of Annie Lawson, Amanda Walker, Sarah Meyer and Kristin Storer, finished first in the Grand Finals, posting a time of 7:44.8.
The second Novice 8 squad placed first in its event defeating Eastern Michigan and Michigan State. Representing the second Novice 8 was Maria Hernandez, Erin Kheun, Elisabeth Benoit, Erin Fein, Jamy Stech, Ashley Sylla, Mary Bell, Barrett Belstra and Carly Schilling. The boat finished in a time of 7:22.
The first Novice 8 boat rowed a competitive race finishing second to Purdue by half a length. IU finished in 7:06.2 as Purdue finished in 7:02.9. Racing for the Novice 8 was coxswain Laura Wharen, Lauren Anderson, Amy Hoffman, Ashley Airis, Katy Dickerson, Leslie Schaffer, Kati Peiss, Laura Lazaridis and Katie Slavik.
In the Grand Finals of the Varsity 8 event IU place fourth, racing in a time of 7:04.7. The Varsity 8 was led by coxswain Becky England and consisted of Stephanie Mast, Emily Rumschlag, Line Espedal, Margaret Clark, Erin Koers, Kelly Schuiling, Ashley Quinn and Danielle Bird. Eastern Michigan captured the Varsity 8 title, finishing in a time of 6:54.2.
The second Varsity 8 finished fourth in the Grand Finals in a time of 7:27.5. Rowing for IU was Rebekha Archibald, Annie Lawson, Amanda Walker, Amanda Tallman, Stephanie Weert, Casey Schoenhoft, Christine Taylor, Sarah Meyer and Kristin Storer.
Racing for the first time as a boat was the Novice 4, which included Valerie Rago, Megan Chobany, Pamela Martins, Jennifer Johnson and Laura Teskoski. The squad finished third in the Grand Finals, rowing in a time of 8:19.4.
The Hoosiers are back in action Saturday, May 3, as they compete in the Big Ten Championships. The Ohio State University will serve as host to the 2003 Big Ten Rowing Championships for the first time and the event will be held at Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River in Columbus, Ohio.
