Hoosiers Prepares for Big Tens

Bloomington, Ind. - The Indiana rowing team will be traveling to Columbus, Ohio, for the Big Ten Championships this weekend. The Ohio State University will serve as host to the 2003 Big Ten Rowing Championships for the first time. The event is scheduled for May 3 at the Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River.
The Hoosiers will compete against Ohio State, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Last year the Ohio State captured the Big Ten title.
The preliminary morning heats will begin at 8 a.m., while the afternoon finals session will be held at noon. Admission is free.

BIG TEN CONFERENCE COMPETITION
The Big Ten Conference has some of the top rowing programs in the nation. Last season Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State represented the Big Ten Conference at the 2002 NCAA Championships at Eagle Creek in Indianapolis, Ind. Ohio State finished fifth, Michigan placed seventh and Michigan State took ninth. In 2001 Michigan was the national runner-ups and Ohio State finished fourth.
Throughout the 2003 season the Big Ten consistently had four teams ranked in the top 20 according to U.S. Rowing Women's NCAA Division I Varsity Eights Top 20 poll. Currently Michigan is ranked seventh, Michigan State stands at 10th, Ohio State is 11th and Iowa holds the 16th spot.
HEAD COACH MARK WILSON REGARDING THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS....
"The entire team began practice this week with a very positive and upbeat attitude after the good rows this past weekend. The Varsity 4 that won in Indy came out of the 2V8 and went into the week with a can do approach and it shows. The Novice boats began by practicing with the Varsity 8's and were very competitive in pieces that were done on the mirror like water of Lake Lemon. The week has been one of good work and focus on the start of the races. Several lineup changes were made to help facilitate a better start in both the Varsity 8 and Novice 8. We are focused on making this the best race of the year and I have mentioned that if they can race like they practice then we will be in good shape on Saturday."
CHAMPIONSHIP SITE: GRIGGS RESERVOIR
The Scioto River, located just four miles west of campus on Fishinger Road and Riverside Drive (State Route 33), has an area of 5,000 meters in length and 230 meters in width. The facility is used for crew, sailing and water skiing.
The river is bigger than the Olentangy and a great place for racing because it is straight and the water flow is controlled. Griggs Reservoir has been ranked as a top spot in the world for rowing and water skiing because of its location in a limestone valley and heavily tree-lined banks. The width from shore to shore is extensive, enabling seven lanes across for competition.
The Scioto originates 50 miles northwest of Columbus near Waynesfield and continues southward to its mouth at the Ohio River.
Griggs is one of two major reservoirs that covers 3,385 surface area acres in parts of Franklin and Delaware counties and is a source of the municipal water supply of Columbus.
