HILDEBRAND AND CARDINELL TURN IN STRONG PERFORMANCES ON 10-METER AT FINA GRAND PRIX IN ROME

Rome, Italy - The whirlwind world tour of Indiana University divers Sara Hildebrand and Cassandra Cardinell is continuing this week as the two are presently competing at the FINA Diving Grand Prix 2003 tour stop in Rome. In yesterday’s action, Hildebrand, a 2000 Olympian on platform and the 2003 Big Ten Diver-of-the-Year, finished second on 10-meter platform, while Cardinell finished an impressive sixth.
Hildebrand, who has exhausted her collegiate eligibility and will be student teaching at St. Paul’s Catholic School in Bloomington this fall, scored 324.24 points on platform, narrowly falling to Mexico’s Jashia Luna, who won the event with 333.06 points. Italy’s Tania Cagnotto was third (320.67) and Austria’s Anja Richter finished fourth with 299.76 points. Spain’s Valentian Marocchi was fifth, while Cardinell finished sixth with 251.13 points. Richter finished seventh on 10-meter at the Sydney Olympics and Luna and Cagnotto also competed at the 2000 Olympic Games.
Following their trip to Rome, it is likely that Hildebrand will have earned enough FINA Grand Prix points to compete at the Super Final in Tultitlan, Mexico, from June 14-15. From June 24-29, Hildebrand and Cardinell will compete at the 2003 Speedo National Diving Championships in Indianapolis. In July, both will compete at the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
