Indiana Diving Captures 10th-Straight National Title

Indianapolis, Ind.- Indiana diving won the combined men’s and women’s championship at the Speedo National Diving Championships over the weekend in Indianapolis, Ind. The title was the team’s 10th in a row. The women also won the team championships, while the men finished third. Indiana Diving head coach Jeff Huber received the Coach of Excellence Award for the championships after leading his team to its 10th-straight national title.
Former Indiana diver Sara Hildebrand led the Hoosier effort. The 2000 Olympian won the All-Around Award for the highest point total. It was the second straight year in which Hildebrand had won the award. She captured three national titles and finished second in another event. Indiana senior to be Cassandra Cardinell was runner-up to Hildebrand for the All-Around Award.
Hildebrand started the week off by capturing national titles in the three-meter and platform synchro events. She teamed with Cardinell to capture both championships. The championship was the third championship for the duo as they won the 2002 Synchronized Platform title.
After finishing sixth in the semifinals of the synchro three-meter, Hildebrand and Cardinell scored 292.56 in the finals to outdistance second place Lauryn McCalley and Lane Bassham. The Hoosier duo won by 10.17 points over their second-place competition.
The Hoosier pair made it a clean sweep of the synchro events by winning the platform title. Hildebrand and Cardinell outdistanced second place Laura Wilkinson and Brittany Viola by nearly 20 points. Wilkinson and Viola placed first during the semifinal round before Hildebrand and Cardinell posted 304.23 in the finals.
Hildebrand laid claim to the All-Around Award with solid individual performances on three-meter and platform. On Sunday, the Roseville, Minn., native captured her third championship by winning the three-meter competition. She placed first in the semifinals and then won the championships with a score of 508.65 in the finals. 2000 Olympian Michelle Davis followed Hildebrand with a 502.05.
In the platform competition, Laura Wilkinson topped Hildebrand in both the semifinals and finals. The former Hoosier standout finished second with a score of 461.70. Hildebrand finished 12th overall on the one-meter after finishing 6th in semifinal A. She was second after the quarterfinal round with a scored of 255.90.
Cardinell placed in the top eight in both the three-meter and platform events. The Indiana senior was eighth in the semifinals of the three-meter and then finished eighth in the finals with a 452.58. A Loudonville, N.Y., product, Cardinell placed fourth on the platform with a score of 430.65. Cardinell was also 14th on the one-meter in the quarterfinals.
Both Hildebrand and Cardinell were named to the Pan-American Team, which includes only four women and four mean. The Pan Am Games are scheduled for Aug. 1-17 in Santo Domingo, The Dominican Republic. Huber was also named a co-head coach for the Pan Am Team.
On the men’s side, the Hoosiers were led by the second-place finish of freshman Brian Mariano and junior Marc Carlton in the synchro three-meter event. The tandem finished behind Tony and Justin Dumais with a score of 291.99. Carlton and Mariano moved up from their fifth place standing after the semifinals.
Also in the synchro three-meter competition, former Hoosier diver Adam Hazes and Oscar Delgado finished 11th at 205.20. Indiana junior Ryan Fagan and Michael Penn finished 14th with a score of 193.41.
Carlton and Mariano also placed in the top eight in the synchro platform event. The Hoosier pair placed sixth with a score of 258.00. Caesar Garcia and Matt Bricker won the event at 333.36.
Carlton placed eighth in the platform competition. He finished sixth in the semifinals before scoring 483.33 to place eighth in the finals. The Webster, N.Y., native also placed 10th on the three-meter with a score of 512.28.
