Cardinell and Hildebrand Capture Two Synchronized Diving Titles at the FINA Diving Grand Prix in Rome

Rome, Italy - The Indiana University diving duo of senior-to-be Cassandra Cardinell and the recently graduated Sara Hildebrand made their mark on the world stage on Tuesday as the two captured both the 3-Meter Synchro and 10-Meter Synchro titles at the FINA Diving Grand Prix 2003 tour stop in Rome.
"We didn't dive as well as we would have liked but it was good enough to win," said Hildebrand from the Newark (N.J.) International Airport early Wednesday afternoon. "It was another good international experience for both of us. We also took advantage of every free moment to explore Rome."
In the 10-Meter final, Hildebrand, a 2000 Olympian on platform, and Cardinell scored 271.77 points to outdistance the Austrian pair of Marion Reiff and Anja Richter (260.97) and Italy's Brenda Spanziani and Valentia Marocchi (260.85).
During the 3-Meter Synchro final, Hildebrand and Cardinell outlasted Greece's Sotiria Koutsopetrou and Diamantina Georsatou by less than one point, 251.70-250.80. The Japanese pair of Misako Yamashita and Sayaka Shibusana finished third with 245.91 points.
Based on Hildebrand's individual performances throughout this year's Grand Prix tour, she has enough FINA Grand Prix points to compete at the Super Final in Tultitlan, Mexico, where she is expected to compete from June 14-15. From June 24-29, Hildebrand and Cardinell will compete at the 2003 Speedo National Diving Championships in Indianapolis. In July, both will compete at the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
