Hildebrand Narrowly Misses Qualifying for Semifinals on 10-Meter Platform at 2003 World Championships in Spain

Barcelona, Spain - Sara (Reiling) Hildebrand, a 2000 Olympian, took to the pool for the first time today at the 2003 Fina World Diving Championships but failed to advance to the semifinals, finishing 19th with a score of 268.23. The top 18 out of 38 divers advanced to the semifinals. She missed qualifying for the semifinals by fewer than 6.0 points. The United States’ Laura Wilkinson, the gold medallist in this event at the Sydney Olympics, qualified for the semifinals with at score of 293.85, which was good for 11th place.
It was one mistake that essentially kept Hildebrand out of the semifinals. Attempting the most difficult dive of the competition (3.6 degree of difficulty), an Armstand with two backward summersaults and 2 1/2 twists, Hildebrand balked on her handstand and was assessed a penalty. The balk cost her more than 20 points and, instead of finishing 13th and qualifying for the semifinals, she missed the semifinals by one slot.
In today's platform finals, Wilkinson finished eighth with a score of 485.40, while Canada's Emile Heymans finished first (597.45).
Hildebrand returns to competition on Friday when she competes in the 3-Meter competition.
This past Monday, Indiana senior-to-be Cassandra Cardinell finished 26th on 1-meter. On Sunday, Cardinell and Hildebrand will compete together in the 3-Meter Synchro competition. The two have also been selected to compete at the 2003 World University Games in Korea in August.
