Hoosiers Take Two at Wendy's Duals

Ashland, Ohio - The Indiana wrestling squad went 2-1 at the Wendy's Duals on Sunday, defeating VMI, 31-6 and knocking off No. 25 Pittsburgh, 19-13 before falling to Ohio, 25-15. IU is now 9-3 on the season.
Senior Coyte Cooper and sophomores Brady Richardson and Joe Dubuque went 3-0 on the day, while redshirt freshman Josh Buuck picked up a pair of victories in two matches in his first action of the season in the heavyweight division.
Cooper, the sixth-ranked wrestler in the nation at 141 pounds, opened his day wrestling at 149 and earned a 12-6 victory over Ohio's Mike Allen. The All-America candidate is now 4-0 wrestling at 149.
In the next two matches, the Anacortes, Wash., native returned to the 141-pound weight class and picked up a pair of victories, including a major decision over David Metzler of VMI, 11-2 and an 8-4 vicotry over No. 19 Ron Tarquinio of Pittsburgh. Cooper is now a perfect 22-0 (18-0 at 141) on the season with six major decisions (five at 149) and is 12-0 (8-0 at 141) in dual action.
No. 12 Dubuque reeled off three consecutive victories to improve his winning streak to 17 straight matches. The Bloomfield, N.J., native picked up a pin and a major decision over 13th-ranked Drew Headlee on his way to improving to 18-2 on the year at 125 pounds with a perfect 12-0 record in dual meets. Additionally, Dubuque has six pins and four major decisions this season.
With his three victories, the 12th-ranked Richardson moves to 16-5 on the season at 174. The Vincennes, Ind., native collected his second pin of the season and defeated No. 19 Francis Iorfido of Pittsburgh, 9-4, improving to 10-2 in dual action.
Buuck went 2-0 wrestling as a heavyweight after entering the day having only wrestled at 197 this season. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native improves to 5-4 on the season and helped the Hoosiers hang onto their lead over Pittsburgh with a clinching 5-0 victory over Travis Shirley.
In addition to the four undefeated wrestlers, juniors Pat DeGain and Andy Rios and sophomore Nate McMillin went 2-1 on the day. The 10th-ranked DeGain had his nine-match winning streak snapped, but still moves to 16-3 this season at 197 with a 10-1 dual mark.
No. 13 Andy Rios (184) now sits at 16-4 on the year and 9-3 in dual action, while McMillin, who returned from an injury last week at the Buckeye Duals, is 3-6 overall and 2-4 in dual meets at 165.
IU returns to Bloomington to face Eastern Michigan and Duke on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 11:00 a.m. at University Gym. The Hoosiers then travel to Indianapolis for the Indianapolis Duals on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 11:00 a.m.
