Hoosiers Sweep Three Matches

"We were in a hole against Eastern Michigan and some guys stepped it up," said Indiana head coach Duane Goldman. "We fell behind early with Coyte's (Cooper) loss, but we had some guys rally. There were definite positives coming out of a negative situation."
Leading the way for IU was sophomore Joe Dubuque. Wrestling at 125, the 15th-ranked wrestler in the nation won both of his matches, improving to 20-2 on the season. Dubuque picked up his second victory by technical fall this season with a 19-4 victory over Matt Cole of EMU. The Bloomfield, N.J., native is now 14-0 in dual meets and has reeled off 19 straight victories, the longest streak on the team, after beginning the season 1-2.
11th-ranked Pat DeGain finished the meet 2-0 with two pins, including a pin of Tony Lyssiotis of Eastern Michigan to even the match against EMU at 17-17. The junior moves to 18-3 overall at 197 with a 12-1 dual mark. DeGain has won 13 of the last 14 matches he has competed in and is tied for second on the team (Dubuque, Joel Powers) with six pins.
Josh Buuck continued his impressive run wrestling as a heavyweight. The redshirt freshman won all three of his matches and picked up the clinching victory for IU over Eastern with a 9-6 win over Tim Breyer. Buuck is 5-0 wrestling as a heavyweight after going 3-4 in the 197-pound division.
Sophomore Nick Spatola added three victories in three matches at 133. Spatola netted a pair of decisions and pinned Steve Cox of Truman State. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native is now 5-6 overall and 3-4 in daul meets on the season.
Rounding out the undefeated ranks for the Hoosiers was No. 13 Brady Richardson. The sophomore went 2-0 at 174 and is 18-5 overall with an 11-match winning streak. He led Indiana's comeback against Eastern Michigan with a 6-5 decision over Tim Hoff. The Vincennes, Ind., native is 12-2 in dual action.
No. 5 Coyte Cooper went 2-1 on the afternoon, dropping his first match of the season. Cooper downed Daniel Shvartsman of Duke, 18-5 before falling to Jermaine Thompson of EMU, 7-6. The loss snapped the senior's winning streak at 23 matches. Cooper rebounded in his final match of the meet, knocking off Merrick Meyer off Truman State by major decision, 12-4. The Anacortes, Wash., native is now 24-1 on the year and 14-1 in dual action with eight major decisions.
Additionally, true freshman Pat Barth picked up his first collegiate victory, defeating Allen Stokes of Truman State, 11-9 at 125.
Next up, the Hoosiers head north to Indianapolis for the Indianapolis Duals on Sunday. IU faces Cumberland at noon, Carson-Newman at 1:30 p.m. and Indianapolis at 3:45 p.m. Goldman enters the Duals needing three victories to become the program's all-time winningest coach. Goldman's 143 wins (143-79-4 overall) rank second behind Charlie McDaniel's 145 victories (145-139-11).
"We have to be ready to go against everyone we go up against," said Goldman. "We need some other guys to step up, and we need to be prepared for everyone we face, tomorrow being no different."
