IU Drops Big Ten Opener

Madison, Wis. - Opening the Big Ten season on the road is never easy, especially wrestling against the 13th-ranked team in the country, and that proved to be the case Friday night. The Indiana wrestling team fell to Wisconsin, 26-12. IU now sits at 15-4 on the season and 0-1 in the league, while the Badgers improve to 14-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
In the opening bout at 125, sophomore Joe Dubuque had his 20-match winning streak snapped, dropping a 7-4 decision to No. 17 Tom Clum. Dubuque, the 14th-ranked wrestler in the nation, falls to 21-3 overall and 15-1 in dual action.
After sophomore Nick Spatola was defeated by No. 18 Ed Gutnik, fifth-ranked Coyte Cooper earned IU's first victory of the conference season. Cooper defeated Tyler Laudon, 7-4 in the 141-pound class to improve to 27-1 overall (17-1 dual record) and cut the U-W lead to 9-3.
However, the Badgers claimed the next five matches, building an insurmountable 26-3 lead. Sophomore Brady Richardson lost for the first time in 12 matches at 174. No. 12 Ralph DeNisco defeated the 13th-ranked Richardson, 9-5. Richardson is now 21-6 on the year with a 16-2 dual record.
Pat DeGain (197) and Josh Buuck (HWT) closed out the meet strong for the Hoosiers with a pair of victories. No. 9 DeGain pinned Brady Reinke to pick up his 21st victory. The junior improves to 21-3, (15-1 in dual meets) with seven pins.
Buuck continued to roll in the heavyweight decision, earning a 6-4 decision over Jareck Horton. Since moving into the division, the redshirt freshman is a perfect 9-0. Overall, Buuck owns a 12-4 mark.
Indiana returns to the mat Saturday afternoon for its second Big Ten match of the season against the Northwestern Wildcats at 2 p.m. in Evanston, Ill. The Hoosiers will then face Missouri Baptist at approximately 6 p.m.
