Hoosiers Win First Big Ten Match

Evanston, Ill. - Coming off a tough loss at Wisconsin in its Big Ten opener, the Indiana wrestling team bounced back with a 19-12 victory over Northwestern on Saturday. IU improves to 16-4 on the season and 1-1 in the league, while the Wildcats fall to 8-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
The Hoosiers won their first four matches and six Hoosier grapplers earned victories. Heavyweight Josh Buuck started IU off on the right foot, defeating Michael Little by major decision, 12-3. The redshirt freshman improved his Big Ten record to 2-0 and his record as a heavyweight to 10-0.
14th-ranked Joe Dubuque rebounded from his first loss in 21 matches Friday evening at Wisconsin with an 8-2 decision over 10th-ranked John Velez at 125. The sophomore is now 1-1 in conference matches and sits at 22-3 overall with victories in 21 of his last 22 matches.
Sophomore Nick Spatola continued Indiana's winning ways, downing Jon Ott, 9-7 at 133. The win evened Spatola's Big Ten record at 1-1 and gave the Hoosiers a 10-0 lead.
Closing out IU's hot start was senior Coyte Cooper. The fifth-ranked wrestler in the nation at 141 pounds picked up his second Big Ten victory in as many matches with a 9-4 decision over Paul Augle. Cooper moves to 28-1 overall this season and 18-1 in dual action.
After the Wildcats cut the Hoosier lead to 13-9 with three straight victories, No. 13 Brady Richardson and No. 17 Andy Rios righted the ship with back-to-back wins. Richardson notched a 10-3 decision over Andrew Curran and Rios put away Joseph Gulotta, 11-4.
Both wrestlers are now 1-1 in Big Ten action and 22-6 overall.
Following its match against Northwestern, Indiana posted a 43-6 victory over Missouri Baptist. Nine IU wrestlers picked up victories in the win over the Spartans.
Up next, the Hoosiers head home for their Big Ten home opener against No. 2 Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 31. The match will begin at 5 p.m. at University Gym.
