No. 2 Illinois Holds Off Hoosiers

Bloomington, Ind. - Looking for consecutive Big Ten victories, the Indiana wrestling team dropped a hard-fought battle against No. 2 Illinois, 24-13 on Saturday evening. The loss drops the Hoosiers to 17-5 overall and 1-2 in the league, while the Fighting Illini move to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
"Illinois is an outstanding team," said Indiana head coach Duane Goldman. "I think we wreslted very well. Brady (Richardson) and Joe (Dubuque) were close in their matches and that would have made a difference. There were a lot of positives out there tonight."
In the opening match at 157 pounds, sophomore Matt Cooper fell to No. 1 Alex Tirapelle by major decision, 10-2. Cooper trailed 2-1 late in the second period before Tirapelle scored three straight takedowns on the way to his 23rd victory of the season without a loss. The Anacortes, Wash., native is now 10-9 on the season and 0-3 in the Big Ten.
After an Illinois' victory at 165, 12th-ranked Brady Richardson lost a competitive match to eighth-ranked Pete Friedl, 6-4 at 174. Richardson cut the deficit to 4-3 in the third period after an escape, but could not get any closer. The sophomore now sits at 22-7 overall and 1-2 in the league.
No. 10 Pat DeGain picked up IU's first victory of the night at 197, defeating Matt Weight, 5-2. Following a scoreless first period, DeGain recorded a takedown for the first two points of the match halfway through period two. The junior put the match away with a reversal early in the period and held on the rest of the way. With the victory, DeGain improves to 22-4 on the year and 2-1 in Big Ten action.
Josh Buuck continued Indiana's momentum, pinning ninth-ranked Mike Behnke at the 4:13 mark to cut the Illini lead to 14-9. Buuck is 12-0 wrestling as a heavyweight this season (15-4 overall) and 3-0 in the league. The victory was the redshirt freshman's first over a ranked opponent in his career and his seventh pin of the season.
At 125, sophomore Joe Dubuque tried to make it three straight wins for the Hoosiers, but came up short, 8-6 in sudden death against No. 3 Kyle Ott. Dubuque, the 13th-ranked wrestler in the nation, trailed 5-2 before evening the match with a reversal and an escape. Both wrestlers scored a point in the final period, forcing the match into sudden death, where Ott recorded a takedown for the two-point victory. Dubuque falls to 23-4 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.
Fifth-ranked Coyte Cooper picked up the final IU victory of the night, defeating Michael Martin by major decision, 14-6. Cooper notched two takedowns and two near falls to take an insurmountable 10-1 lead into the second period. The senior improves to 30-1 on the year and 3-0 in the Big Ten with nine major decisions.
Up next, the Hoosiers return to the mat on Saturday, Feb. 7 against No. 7 Minnesota. Match time is slated for 7 p.m. at University Gym.
"From here on out our schedule doesn't get any easier," said Goldman. "We don't have time to sit back. We need to continue to focus on the positives and improve in the areas we need to."
