BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After posting an eighth place finish at the 2004 Midlands Championships, the Indiana wrestling team remained ranked 19th in the latest W.I.N. magazine rankings (Jan. 4). The weekly rankings are compiled after receiving feedback from Division I-A wrestling coaches.
Two-time NCAA champion Oklahoma State remains in first. The Hoosiers are one of nine Big Ten teams currently ranked in the top-25. Those schools are Michigan at No. 2, Illinois at No. 3, Minnesota at No. 7, Iowa at No. 8, Wisconsin at No. 14, Michigan State at No. 18, Penn State at No. 20 and Northwestern at No. 21.
IU also boasts of five ranked individual wrestlers. At 125 pounds Junior All-American Joe Dubuque is ninth. Senior Mike Simpson at 141 pounds follows at No. 12. After a strong showing at the Midlands Championships, redshirt freshman Brandon Becker jumps in at No. 19. Junior Brady Richardson is18th at 174 pounds, while junior Andy Rios remains 17th at 184 pounds.
In the latest NWCA/InterMat rankings, Dubuque is fifth, Simpson is eighth, Becker is 17th, Richardson is 20th, Rios is 19th and DeGain is fifth.
The biggest Hoosier to make a jump in the rankings was senior heavyweight Pat DeGain, who after a first place showing at the Midlands Championships, jumps 12 spots from 18th to sixth.
The 19th-ranked Hoosiers are off until Jan. 14-15, when they travel to Hampton, Va. for the 2004 Virginia Duals.
