BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After nearly knocking off the Texas Longhorns, 170-130, in the regular-season lidlifter on Oct. 8, Indiana University swept the Big Ten Swimmer and Diver of the Week awards for the week of Oct. 11. The conference office chose junior Kevin Swander, along with Wisconsin senior Eric Wiesner, as the Big Ten Co-Swimmer of the Week, while senior Marc Carlton garnered Diver of the Week recognition.
"We are proud to see one of our Indiana swimmers win this award," Head Coach Ray Looze said. "Kevin had really been working hard in preparation for the end of the season so it was nice to see him swim so fast considering his workload."
Swander snared his first Co-Swimmer of the Week accolade after tallying an event title and a trio of second-place finishes in the Hoosiers' first dual meet of the season against perennial powerhouse Texas. The junior claimed first in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 56.07 and was out-touched by just .03 seconds to finish second in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:04.04. Swander was also part of the second-place 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay that finished with times of 1:31.08 and 3:04.38, respectively.
"I am glad to see Marc receive the recognition and award," Head Diving Coach Dr. Jeff Huber said. "He is a great team leader for us and sets the pace everyday in practice. Although he is not in top form, he still performed very well in the meet."
Carlton earned his fifth Diver of the Week recognition after finishing first in both the one-meter and three-meter springboard events against Texas on Friday. The senior earned marks of 315.90 (1m) and 333.07 (3m), both of which were zone qualifying marks.
Next up, the Cream and Crimson play host to Evansville on Oct. 15 at 3 p.m., in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The meet will feature both the men's and women's swim teams in action against the Purple Aces.
