Hoosiers Play Host to Evansville

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana men's and women's swimming and diving teams play host to Evansville on Friday, Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
The two squads will face off in a 14-event meet. The events in this week's competition will be the 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 freestyle, the 100 and 200 backstroke, the 100 and 200 breaststroke, the 100 and 200 butterfly and the 200 IM as well as the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. IU's divers will also take part in non-scoring events under meet rules at 3:30 p.m.
Last time out, the University of Evansville women's swimming and diving team finished fifth out of eight teams in the Dennis Start Relays at Notre Dame.
The women's team of Cari Kauffman, Blair Bosta, Taryn Brelage and Corinne Murphy swam a 4:55.73 in the 400 breast relay to finish second. Melissa Dietz and Melissa Claycomb finished third in the one meter diving with a combined score of 179.20.
INDIANA BOUND
The travel budget should be lessened this year as both the NCAA Zone Diving Championships and the NCAA Championships will be hosted by Purdue in nearby West Lafayette, Ind. That should make the six Hoosiers (Heather Chapman/Indianapolis, Ashley Greene/Indianapolis, Meghan Keefer/Fort Wayne, Lauren Schrader/Lafayette, Jade Summerlin/Fishers and Lindsay Weigle/Bloomington) on the squad that hail from Indiana happy as well.
CIRCLING THE GLOBE
Head Coach Dorsey Tierney not only recruits nationally, but also globally as evidenced by the four Hoosiers hailing from international destinations. Kristen Bradley and Angela Calvert both call Ontario, Canada home, while Susanna Ernst's hometown is Vienna Austria. Annica Lofstedt (Orebo, Sweden) also comes from across the pond.
TORCH THE RECORD BOOKS
Last season's squad took a lighter to the IU record books by eclipsing 14 watershed marks, including all four relay standards, last season. The Hoosiers came up just shy of the eight other records that were left to a new crop of Cream and Crimson to rewrite.
SEVEN STRONG, WILL WE SEE EIGHT?
Dr. Jeff Huber, Indiana men's and women's diving coach, was selected as U.S. Diving's National Coach of the Year for the United State Olympic Committee's Coach Recognition Program for an incredible seventh consecutive time.
The accolade closed out an amazing year for Huber as the Indiana diving program continued its dominance on the national scene by claiming the program's 11th consecutive U.S. Combined (men and women) National Championship. The men's and women's programs joined to outdistance second-place Auburn by over 100 points.
ATHENS BOUND
Four Hoosiers represented the U.S. in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. Current diver Cassandra Cardinell, former divers Sara Hildebrand and Kimiko Soldati and Head Diving Coach Dr. Jeff Huber all ventured to the home of the Olympiad over the summer. Cardinell and Hildebrand took seventh in the synchro 10-meter, while Hildebrand took 10th in the 10-meter. Soldati claimed 21st place in the three-meter springboard.
