IU Prepares for the Head of the Elk

ELKHART, Ind. - The Indiana women's rowing team will be back in action this weekend, as the Hoosiers travel up north to the Elk River to participate in the 2004 Head of the Elk on Sunday.
The format for the weekend is the standard fall format, which is called "Head Racing." In Head Races, crews race 3 miles on a long winding course down a river. The crews are started at fifteen-second intervals and race against the clock. The crew that covers the full course in the least amount of time wins.
"This will be a real good test for us," said head coach Steve Peterson. "It will give us an idea of how our training has been going this fall."
IU is set to enter two Varsity Eights, one Varsity Four and two Novice Eights in the event. The primary competition will come from nationally ranked crews such as Michigan, Michigan St, Wisconsin, and Notre Dame, all of whom finished in the top-25 in the final Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing Poll in the spring of 2004.
