ELKHART, Ind. - The Indiana women's rowing team had a fair showing at the Head of the Elk, its lone fall regatta of the season, held this past Sunday.
The weekend was topped off by a medal winning performance by the Varsity Eight, composed of coxswain Sarah Meyer, stroke Amanda Walker, Lauren Anderson, Ashley Airis, Laura Lazaridis, Stacey Young, Kelly Schuiling, Dana Lynn Powell, and Elisabeth Benoit in the Open Eight A event. The medal was the first for the Hoosier Varsity Eight at the Elk since 2000, when the Cream and Crimson finished with a silver. The varsity squad also placed fourth in the Open Eight B event.
The Varsity four, led by coxswain Raechelle Medellin, stroke Erin Kuehn, Amanda Tallman, Kristin Storer and Mary Bell finished sixth in the Open Four race.
"The bronze medal won by the varsity women was a huge step forward for the crew and the program as well," said head coach Steve Peterson. " It clearly shows the team is improving and that we are now able to compete with other nationally ranked programs."
At the Elk were several crews who raced at the NCAA Championships last year, including Notre Dame (who finished the season ranked 11th in the country in the varsity eight), Michigan State (ranked 13th) and Wisconsin (ranked 16th), as well as other strong Midwestern crews from Eastern Michigan and Purdue.
"This weekend was very good for all three varsity crews," said Peterson. "All three surpassed the results of last year, and even more impressive than that was the fact that our top varsity crews were very competitive with and even beat nationally ranked crews. We really set a new standard for this program by beating Notre Dame, and rowing very competitively against the Wisconsin crew."
The Hoosier novice team competed bravely in their first ever regatta. The Novice Eight team placed 12th in the Novice Eight A event.
"We performed on par with the work we have accomplished this season," said novice head coach Carmen Mirochna. " Without having any recruits in this line-up for our first race of the season, it was a solid performance. These athletes have a lot of potential and the more strokes they take the closer we get to realizing it."
Indiana will be in action this Saturday, Nov. 5, as the Hoosiers host Dayton in a scrimmage. The time for the scrimmage has still not been decided.
