Peterson Signs Recruits (11-23-04)

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana rowing head coach Steve Peterson has announced the signings of five student-athletes for the 2005-06 season. Hannah Elsy (Twickenham, England), Ashley Johnson (Alpharetta, Ga.), Valerie Mercer (Jacksonville, Fla.), Emily Clarke (Bloomington, Ind.), and coxswain Bridgett Bartholomew (Marina Del Ray. Calif.), have all committed to continue their rowing careers at Indiana.
" I am confident that this is the best recruiting class that Indiana Rowing has seen to date," said Peterson. " I believe that the incoming Hoosiers will have an immediate impact on the IU rowing program."
The class, which averages 6-0 tall, will be eligible to compete in the fall of 2005.
Elsy is a 6-2, 165-pound rower with a 7:15 erg, while the 5-11 Johnson, and the Mercer 6-0, are tall, athletic rowers with solid ergs who will help take this program to the next level. Another great addition to this class is top swimmer Clarke from nearby Bloomington North High School.
"When you look at the progress this team made last year and add athletes to the roster like Hannah Elsy, a British Junior National Team Rower with successful international racing experience, there is no doubt that we are going to be an up and coming team not only in the Big Ten, but in the nation, said Peterson."
To help steer these rowers to success, the Hoosiers recruited 5'1" coxswain, Bartholomew to lead the way.
Coach Peterson credits his assistant coaches successful class to the big recruiting push his staff focused on this fall. By hiring two new full time assistants to concentrate on recruiting, the Hoosiers were able to focus more energy than ever on national and international recruiting. Looking at the results, Peterson believes that his staff's efforts have really paid off.
